Todoroki Shoto x Reader: Smile

Todoroki was requested with a reader who has braces that are kind of tied to their quirk. Braces are a real pain (I used to have them) so this kind of took me down memory lane lol. Enjoy!

Your quirk was powerful. It was strong enough for you to be able to get into U.A. High with pretty high scores after all. Despite what some people thought about you though, you still were struggling with your self-esteem like most people. A strong quirk didn't necessarily mean you had overflowing confidence in yourself.

Your braces didn't help either. Yes, you needed them, and your parents said that braces actually suited your face, but what did that matter? You were going to a new school, one of the top hero schools in the world, and you were going to probably always be known as the shy kid with braces to match.

But out of all of the things you had expected from U.A. High, you didn't expect to suddenly have a crush on the quiet white and red haired boy in your class. And for him to be one of the strongest students in the class no less! Why'd your emotions have to do this to you?

Why? Why? Why!?

"Y/n? Are you feeling alright? You look a little pale...are you coming down with something? A cold perhaps?" Todoroki asked you, interrupting your thoughts. You sat directly behind him and it was now lunch time...you must have been zoning out this entire time!

"Aah! No...no I'm fine. Actually I've never been better!" you said, giving him a big thumbs up. You wanted to smile, but opted to just hide your mouth behind your hand. He looked at you with those stunning eyes of his and gave you a small smile.

"Why do you do that y/n?"

"Do what?"

"That. With your hand...you always hide your mouth with your hand when you're smiling. Why?" he asked you bluntly, making your cheeks light up in embarrassment. You didn't think he had noticed your tick, but apparently you were wrong.

"I-It's just a habit...it's nothing serious or anything!" You exclaimed. "I don't smile that often anyway...so you're not really missing much."

"How would I know if I'm missing something if I've never seen it?"

"I-I..."

"I will definitely see you smile someday y/n...and I'm sure you'll look great."

With that, he turned around so his back was facing you and you two didn't talk about your smile after that. Well you two didn't talk about it at least for one week after that.

Kaminari was the class clown, and you should have known better to let him persuade you into watching a funny video during class. Even Bakugou chuckled at Kaminari's video choices which was really saying something!

But you told Kaminari that you would 'love' to see a funny video. Why not?

You put his earbuds in your ear and he started the video. It looked like a normal cat video at first but the cat was making all of these strange faces because it had a brain-freeze. The faces...the upbeat music used in the video...it was all too much.

"Pfft I-I...bwahaha!!" you burst out laughing, tears threatening to fall from the corners of your eyes as you clutched your sides. "Hahaha!"

You let your guard down and forgot to hide your smile behind your hand, and your eyes met Todoroki's who was looking at you from over his shoulder. His eyes were wide and you immediately slumped down in your seat as if that would make you invisible to him.

".....Y/n are you done? No phones in class either!" Aizawa said sternly, making you nod at him.

"S-Sorry...won't happen again." You said with burning cheeks.

Todoroki turned back in his seat, much to your unhappiness. You were sure that he was probably judging you right now and deciding that your braces looked very awkward and weird.

"Y/n..." Todoroki whispered after a few minutes. You looked up and saw his arm was stretching backwards awkwardly and he was holding a small piece of paper. Without speaking to him, you took the paper and unfolded it, making sure that Aizawa couldn't see you read it.

Sorry for writing this in class, I just needed you to know that your smile is beautiful. You should never hide it because you never know if it'll brighten up someone's day!

You felt your face burn hot as you read the letter over and over again. Beautiful...brighten...never hide it...this is what ran through Todoroki's head when he saw your smile for the first time? It just seemed too good to be true!

You hurriedly wrote down something that was long overdue on some of your notebook paper, and hoped that your handwriting was legible enough for him to read. You poked his shoulder and he hung his arm down low so he could take the note discreetly.

"Thank you..." you whispered quietly, so quietly that Todoroki probably didn't even hear you. But it didn't matter as long as he read your note...

Class ended and you couldn't be happier, not just because you could finally be free of Aizawa's extremely watchful eyes but because you also wanted to see what Todoroki's reaction to your note would be. To say you were nervous would be an understatement. You felt almost sick to your stomach actually.

Both you and Todoroki were still sitting down so you just poked his shoulder to get his attention and hoped for the best.

"H-Hey Todoroki...did you read my note?" you asked him, your wide eyes meeting his cool ones.

"I did."

"S-So what do you think?"

"Ah! How rude of me y/n. I should write a reply right?" he said, ripping off a small piece of notebook paper. He wrote a few words before handing it to you. Your fingers brushed together lightly when you took it from him and you hoped you weren't blushing too hard. "I hope this is a...good response. I don't have a lot of experience with this kind of thing."

"Todoroki...it's perfect!" you exclaimed happily, your eyes scanning over his reply.

Dear y/n,

Yes, I'd love to go on a date. Thanks so much.

His reply was blunt but very much like him but it made your heart race with excitement. "Y/n..."

"Yes?"

"You're smiling again." he stated, his eyes softening a bit at the corners. Your smile grew even wider, and your usual instinct that made you want to cover up your braces smile was gone.

"Of course I am! Is is brightening up your day like what you said in your note?"

"Yes it is. It really is."
