Lottie had been on her Christmas break for two weeks now, and despite being in the orphanage, she definitely didn't regret coming back.

She hadn't realised how much she missed Kaycie until she was back in her company. Kaycie found a way to make the whole deadbeat dad situation easier to deal with. Perhaps it was her humour in the whole thing, or perhaps it was just easier as she had been through a similar thing.

Either way, Kaycie made things better.

The pair were sitting on the roof of the orphanage, cigarettes in between their fingers as the full moon shone brightly.

"So, is Beauxbatons any better this year?" Charlotte asked, exhat the smoke from her lungs as she spoke.

Kaycie was someone who struggled in school a lot. She wasn't the biggest fan of Beauxbatons. She felt like she didn't fit in, like she wasn't as prestigious as the other girls. They were all pretty, some were veelas, some just had natural perfection. They had blonde hair and blue eyes, with naturally clear skin and perfectly manicured nails. They were all well spoken and they had perfect manners, they were the type of girls that children would look up to.

Kaycie always felt out of place. She had black hair and liked to wear eyeliner, she wasn't one for bright colours and she had brown eyes. She wasn't the top of her classes and she found it hard to focus at times. There was a painfully obvious difference between her and her friends, it made her feel like she didn't belong there, like she shouldn't be there. It was an ongoing cycle of insecurities and stress, things she had never really known how to handle.

Her life on a whole wasn't as easy as the average fourth year. She had witnessed her parents brutal deaths in a car crash and was then shoved in an orphanage with nothing but the memories of the day they died to cling onto and the key to their family vault.

That all changed of course. Kaycie made friends with Charlotte when she was six years old, Lottie was only five but it was probably one of the best decisions she could make. The two grew up together and they learnt their ways around things, they used one another as their main source of survival. Kaycie had some more unhealthy coping mechanisms compared to Charlotte, turning to all sorts of things in hope they'd keep her going. They did, but they all held nasty consequences. Not that Kaycie really cared.

Kaycie was someone who would gladly listen to other peoples problems, but hated when she needed to tell people her own. She distracted herself by getting Lottie to open up, or by helping Charlotte with her problems because it simply took away the attention of her issues.

Charlotte liked talking to Kaycie, but on the other hand she always felt guilty, like she wasn't doing enough for Kaycie and yet, she never knew what else she could do. Of course she was there for Kaycie as much as she could be, however sometimes she didn't really know how to help her friend.

"I still hate it, if that's what you mean." Kaycie sighed. "Fran helps, makes everything a little easier, y'know?"

"Yeah, I'm so happy you have her Kayc, you seem so happy when you talk about her," Charlotte said softly. She was grateful that Kaycie had close friends at school, especially considering Lottie wasn't there with her. "I'll write to you more this term."

"Thanks," Kaycie grinned. "Keep me posted on everything."

"I can confirm that Theo and Alex liked your beautiful words against Lupin, by the way." Charlotte smirked, purposely making sure she didn't call him dad. He didn't deserve that title.

"How have things really been? With your dad and everything.."

"Fine." Lottie shrugged, although that wasn't particularly true. Her heart ached at the mere thought of him. She didn't understand why, she hated him and refused to go near him, and yet still she missed him. It still made her heart twist when she saw Lucas and Remus together, it hurt when she saw the Potter siblings joking around with him as if they were family.

"Does he ever talk to you?" Kaycie asked curiously. Lottie hadn't been very specific in her letters when she mentioned Remus, which only made her more interested in the subject. She had so many questions, the whole becoming a teacher at the daughter I abandoned's school didn't really make sense. Not to her, anyway.

"He tried to apologize...well in the most pathetic way possible. He doesn't really try. It's just minimal effort." Charlotte shrugged, flicking her cigarette off the roof.  "He won't stop talking to me. Keeps trying no matter how much I shout and explain that I don't want him there. It's draining and he won't budge, I just want peace for myself."

"He sounds like a right prick if you ask me."

"He is." Lottie nodded. "Still hurts though...in a way."

Kaycie didn't say anything, she simply nodded as she looked up at the stars. "D'you think he'll leave in June? Just have this job as a one year thing?"

"I'm not sure really...everyone seems to love him though. Same with Potter."

"Are they good teachers?"

"James is not a teacher, he just helps out with quidditch and deals with detentions. He's not too bad - as a person. I just think the fact he didn't stop Lupin from taking me here...he didn't even come and get me. That's what throws me off." Lottie said, tugging at the sleeves of her jumper. "He did try to explain something to me, but it was overwhelming and he didn't end up explaining, he said he's not the bad guy and I don't know his side of the story yet, but I don't know, anyone can say that about anything."

"Yeah, sounds like a dick, but maybe find out? I mean, you mentioned him being nice to you in a detention. Would you like some kind of relationship with him? Maybe it would be good for you?"

"Yeah, James tries more then Lupin." Lottie said thoughtfully. "I had detention with him for two weeks, he's not a complete dick, it's just the thought of how much he could've helped...I could get around with seeing him as an ok person, it's just awkward for everyone else, I don't want them to expect the same if they're not trying."

"Yeah, I get it." Nodded Kaycie.

"Everyone says Lupin is a good teacher, although all I can think about is how much I hate him when I see him so I'm not really sure." Lottie let out a small laugh. "I still want to throw silver at him."

"Me too," Kaycie grinned, looking up at the sky. "It's a full moon now...any idea what he does on the moons?"

"I'm not sure. I don't think he stays at Hogwarts though." Lottie said quietly, remembering the time she overheard McGonagall and James talking about how he was going to Wales that night.

"I wonder how long he's been a wolf for." Kaycie said curiously. She had read about werewolves, she knew all about the 'monster' stereotype, she knew better than to believe books like that though. Apparently the full moon was distressing and painful, the human loses their consciousness and its replaced by the anger of the wolf, something they can't control.

"I dunno." Lottie shrugged. "I vaguely remember the scars on his face, so probably a long time."

Kaycie nodded and the two stayed silent for a while, simply enjoying the company of one another as they watched the stars, both of them silently praying things would get easier for themselves.

It's a shame they wouldn't.
