Never in my life

have I been so enchanted by such friendly eyes

that peer from under the brim of a hat.

 Every chance when you turn those eyes from me

I sneak a glance in awe

from how much you resemble a fictional character

I have timelessly adored,

who could not wear his hat as well as you.

 I lie to myself, convinced that I do not yearn

for this real life mad hatter

that daily consumes my thoughts.

 My secret truth is that I’ve liked you from the start.

Ironically you so saintly torture my mind,

everyday wanting you more and more.

 We are both mixed up in such a wonderland.

we catch eyes because we are so different than the rest,

yet so uniquely similar in our odd ways.

 In real life

you are the Mad Hatter.

 I wish it were as simple as a wise-worded caterpillar

smoking rings from a hookah,

could let me know if I could be

your real life Alice,

Someone I’d dearly love to be.
