Beautifully Barren

The streetlamps stands in solitude

tangled in electric wire at the end of each block

extending down the dark suburban street.

Stars compete with the artificial light

that hang over the flawlessly snow paved roads

like frozen, wilted flowers.

Houses wrapped like gift boxes in frosty white,

and strung with twinkling lights

of every child’s favorite colors.

Behind the icicle-guarded windows

holds the soft snores of sleeping families

warm in their beds.

Clouds held by the hands of angels

shed sugary flakes of winter from above.

I follow my shadow as it walks slowly

down this temporary ghost town,

leaving a single pair of footsteps

to the beautifully barren night.
