January 10, 1992
I woke up the next morning to the sound of Lorelai and a man giggling. Kurt wasn't home and neither was Dave or Krist. I rushed out to the living room and saw the neighbor on the couch.
"You're still here?" I asked him.
"Yeah," He stood up. "I'll get going."
"Why don't you stay for breakfast?"
"That's alright, I just-Breakfast sounds so nice."
I smiled and made some toast for him and Lorelai.
I would have never been this trusting of someone, but he reminded me of Robert. The guy was a complete stranger and I let him sleep in my house after five minutes of meeting him-that sounded like a love story.
"Who are you?" Lorelai asked the neighbor.
"My name's Gavin."
Gavin! I had completely forgotten his name until just now.
"My name's Lorelai."
"That's a pretty name. Is that your auntie?"
"No, that's my mommy."
"She's your daughter?!"
"Yeah," I sat down at the table with them.
"Thanks for breakfast."
"You're welcome."
"Thank you," Lorelai said.
"You're welcome," I took a sip of some random cup of coffee that was lying around.
I had so many doubts about Gavin. I didn't even know who the fuck he was and he spent the night at my house.
"Listen, I'm sorry," Gavin apologized. "I threw myself into your house last night. My life has just been shit and it's been going down lately. I have no one."
"You're not going to do anything, right?" I asked him.
"No, no, I would never."
"If you do or if I find out that you even tried to touch my daughter, I will fucking ruin you and your life and everything you have left. Do you understand me?"
His eyes were wide. "Yes, yes."
"Good. I'm Ruby."
"I'm Gavin."
"I know."
"When are you moving out?'
"Soon. I don't know the exact date, but I have to be out of here by the next six weeks."
"Six weeks?!"
"Yeah."
"Damn. Looks like we're not going to have a lot of time to get to know each other."
"I guess not."
"What time is it?"
"It's nine."
"Shit! I have to go."
"Oh, okay."
"Thanks for everything!" He ran out of the apartment.
I ran to the door and locked it, then looked at Lorelai.
"He's silly," She giggled and went into her bedroom.
I called Dave and he answered right away.
"Hello?" He asked.
"Dave."
"Ruby!"
"What are you doing?"
"Just relaxing."
"I don't know what to do."
"What do you mean?"
I explained to him everything that happened with Gavin.
"No fucking way," He said.
"I hate myself. He knows my name and Lorelai's name and-"
"Hey, think about it this way: He probably already knew."
"How?"
"Hello? You're dating Kurt Cobain."
"Oh, right. But still, Dave! What if I made a bad decision?"
"Call Shelli and ask her to spend a couple nights with you."
"Ew, no."
"What?!"
"No, no, not to Shelli. It's just that I barely know her-we won't have anything to do."
"That's better than getting killed, right?"
"Right."
"Alright."
"Please, please don't tell Kurt."
"I promise I won't."
"Thanks, Dave."
"Do you want to say hi to him?"
"Of course."
"Kur-Oh God."
"What?"
"He's in such a pissy mood. How about later?"
"Um, sure."
"Ruby?"
"Yeah?"
"Do me a favor and call Shelli. I would hate something happening to you and me knowing that I could have prevented it."
I groaned. "Fine."
I hung up the phone. I liked Shelli-of course I did-but there was literally nothing to do.
I ended up calling her and-no hesitation-she agreed to spend the night.
I dwelled on the fact that Dave said Kurt was in a pissy mood. Kurt was always annoyed when we called (When he was sleeping with Courtney). What if he was cheating again, but with someone else? What if the same thing was happening all over again? My mind dwelled on the fact that he was probably cheating on me, but the thoughts quickly stopped when there was a knock on the door.
I opened it up and Shelli was standing there. As soon as she saw me, she threw her arms around me and I stood there awkwardly.
"Hey!" She put her stuff on the couch.
"You can put your stuff on my bed," I attempted to be friendly.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shelli liked to talk-a lot. She started talking about talking. I was probably being so distant because I didn't really want to be friends with her unless I had to, but I needed to stop being a bitch.
"How have you and Krist been lately?" I asked her.
"We've been really good. Have you ever thought about getting married?"
"Yes, of course I have. Will I? Probably not anytime soon. You know Kurt, he doesn't seem like the type to get married."
"When I first saw you guys in the news, I thought he was just going to use you for sex, but look at how long you guys lasted!"
"Why would he use me for sex? He doesn't treat girls like that." I defended him.
"He was in a dark place when you guys first got together."
"He didn't act like it."
"And you didn't act like you lost your boyfriend to suicide."
"Ex-boyfriend. Kurt didn't commit suicide."
"Right, right."
"Do you and Kurt get along?"
"Not really," She chuckled. "He always has this attitude towards me. He's not a dick, he just doesn't seem like he wants anything to do with me."
I looked down. "Do you feel the same way about me?"
"Definitely. That's why I got so happy when you called me to come stay with you."
I felt bad. "I'm sorry."
"It's alright, I get it. I'm kind of tired. You ready to go to sleep?"
"I think I'm going to stay up for a little-just go lay down in my bed. I'll be there soon."
"Thank you."
When I heard my door shut, I walked over to the phone and I called Kurt.
"Hello?" He answered after one ring. His voice was very quiet and gruffy-I could tell he had been sleeping.
"I'm calling to say goodnight."
"Ruby?"
"Yeah, it's me."
"Oh my God, Ruby!" He started laughing. "I was just fucking thinking about you!"
It was as if he had been awake the whole time.
I chuckled. "I love you."
"I love you, too. God, I miss you so much."
"I miss you more."
"I'll be home soon."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
