October 20, 1990
"Open your mouth," I chuckled and put the spoon in her mouth. "Eat it. Eat it. One...Two...Don't make me get to three. Lorelai!" The phone started ringing, so I groaned. "I'm going to talk to you about this later."
She giggled and ran into her bedroom. I answered the call and said, "Hello?"
"Hello, is this Ruby?"
"This is Ruby. Who are you?"
"Dave, remember me?!"
I gasped. "No fucking way!"
"Yes!"
"Oh my God, hi! Wow! Hi!"
"Hi!" He chuckled. "How have you been?"
"Good, good. How have you been?"
"Good. I'm in a band."
"Drummer?"
"Mhm."
"I always told you that you would make it."
"Yeah, well, I'm in town-for the tour-and wanted to stop by. Do you still live at the same house?"
"Yeah."
"Come outside then."
I hung up the phone and opened up the front door to my apartment.
"LORELAI!" I called her name.
"COMING!"
I picked her up as she approached me, put on my sandals, then walked outside. I set her down, held her hand, and walked into the parking lot.
And that was when I saw him.
I ran towards Dave and hugged him.
"OH MY GOD!" I shrieked. "YOU'RE HERE!"
"I wouldn't lie!" He chuckled, then looked confused as he saw Lorelai. "Is that-"
"Yeah, that's Lorelai," I smiled.
"SHE'S SO BIG!" He kneeled down and shook her hand.
She got nervous and held behind my leg, clutching it.
"Come inside!" I invited him.
"I don't know-my band is here, too-"
"Dave, come on. Bring them inside."
"Okay."
He called the guys' names and we started walking. I didn't get a chance to see what they looked like since I had already turned around.
"Lorelai, go to your room," I said as soon as we got inside.
"But-"
"No! Go to your room!"
She huffed and walked into her room, slamming the door.
"Fucking brat," I muttered and softly chuckled, turning around. "I will be right back. Just sit down."
I walked into Lorelai's bedroom and sat down on her bed.
"Lorelai, do you know why you're in trouble?"
"I didn't do anyfing."
"Yes you did. You didn't eat your food."
"I'm sorry, Mommy. Your food taste yucky."
"Lorelai! You don't tell people that!"
"I'm sorry."
"Go eat one bite and then you can be done."
"Okay."
She walked to the dinner table and I sat down on the couch.
"Ruby, this is Krist," Dave said pointing to a very tall man.
"Hi," I smiled and shook his hand.
"And that's Kurt."
I shook Kurt's hand and smiled. "Hi."
"I finished, Mommy!" Lorelai held up her plate.
"Go put it in the sink," I said.
She put it in the sink, then went into her room.
"How are you doing with Robert and all?" Dave asked me.
"I've been doing alright," I faked a smile.
"Who's Robert?" Krist asked.
"Our friend, well, Ruby's boyfriend," Dave said. "He killed himself."
"Do you know why he offed himself?" Kurt asked as if this was a normal conversation.
I still answered him. "I don't know. I mean, he had a daughter and a girlfriend who loved him. Him and his dad were really so close, so that could've been a part of it. Um, we were also running low on money."
"Have you dated anyone else?" Dave asked.
"No, I'm too scared to."
"What are you scared of?"
"They might do the same thing that he did. And, I don't need a boyfriend. I need to focus on Lorelai."
"Lorelai's your daughter?" Krist asked.
"Mhm. I had her when I was 16."
"Do you remember my reaction when I found out you were pregnant?!" Dave shouted.
I started laughing just remembering it. "We were sitting down at our table at lunch and Robert and I pulled Dave aside and told him and he just started fucking crying! I got so confused and so did Robert!"
"I was worried for you guys!"
"What did your parents do?" Kurt asked.
"Well, my mom and dad both yelled at me, so I started crying and just went to my room," I smiled slightly.
Lorelai started screaming, so I got startled and ran into her bedroom.
"What happened?" I asked.
"My t-t-toe!" She sobbed harder.
"Come here, baby," I held her and looked down at her toe. There wasn't anything that showed it had gotten hurt. "Oh no! This is very bad! We're going to have to call the toe doctor and cut your toe off."
"WHAT?!"
"Yeah, if it hurts that bad, you shouldn't have it."
"No, Mommy!" She started wailing.
"Lorelai, I'm not being serious," I kissed the top of her head. "Are you alright?"
"Mhm."
"Alright, good," I walked back and sat down on the couch.
"She's single-" Dave stopped as he saw me sat down.
"How old are you?" Krist asked me.
"I'm 20," I replied.
"Ah, I see."
"Ruby?" Dave asked.
"Hm?"
He just hugged me and started crying. Him and Robert were friends. Did they get along the best? No, but they were still friends.
"How are you okay?" Dave asked.
"I got over it. No, let me rephrase that. I talked about it and got through it. Talking about your emotions really help. Enough talking about me, though. Talk about your band!"
"Um, we're 'Nirvana'," Dave said. "Um, we're a punk rock band and we're good. Kurt's the vocals and guitar, Krist is bass, and I'm drums."
"Oh, so you sing?" I asked Kurt.
Kurt nodded his head.

It was already 11:33 and they were still over.
"What movie should we watch?" I asked, looking through the movies I had.
"I'm a movie expert," Krist walked over and looked at the movies.
I sat back down and stared at Krist.
It was weird talking about Robert again-especially to someone that knew him.
"You okay?" Dave asked, interrupting my thoughts.
"I'll be fine," I smiled.
