Chaeyoung's pov

I take a deep breath as I step outside the changing room in my taekwondo uniform. My teammate is already waiting for me and so is the coach. “Manoban” he calls grumpily.

“You’re in for the State Championship. If you do shit again, we are going to have to kick you from the team” he grunts and I roll my eyes and clench my jaws tightly. Why can’t he just move on from the incident two days ago?

It’s not like I intentionally kicked someone square on their face and made their nose wrecked so badly that a surgery was needed to fix it back.

I was just having a bad day and the bitch was surely stepping on my nerves. “Manoban” the coach calls again, his voice is louder this time. “Fine” I say. “Whatever you want”

“You know” he pushes his rimless glasses by its hinges before looking at me directly in the eyes.

“The only reason why I keep you in the team is because you are a great fighter. But if you are going to be a child and throw a tantrum whenever you like, I won’t hesitate to kick your ass away” he adds and I make sure to let him know how I am feeling with that bullshit of a threat by rolling my eyes to the back of my head.

“I don’t think that’s how it works. You can’t kick me out of the team because I’m the one contributing much to it”

“Well if you think so” the coach clears his throat. “It’s time for you to play your role”. I sigh. For a moment, he is right. I shouldn’t let my focus on the State Championship that I have been aiming for wavers just because some stupid shit happened.

Although that stupid shit includes mama taking mommy back after their divorce. After all that had happened. Just because they don’t want the ever so stupid Lilibear to fucking try killing herself again.

Well, the whole school sure doesn’t know about that since halmoni makes sure no words get around about that incident.

And although I can just tell anyone about it since they are all busy thinking that Lilibear is somewhere in the Caribbean, taking a break for unknown reasons, I am not a monster.

“Hey”

Mama smiles briefly as she stretches her body over the beverage holder to unlock the door for me from the inside of the ever shiny, white Volvo.

“Hey” I echo back, breathing out nervously. I don’t wait until she tells me to buckle up because I kind of do it quickly and hastily  before putting on my airpods max to avoid her from talking about the subject I have a sore point in.

“Chaeng” she calls and I realise that the car hasn’t moved at all so I know that she is somehow in the mood to talk.

But what else is left to talk about? She has already made it clear. She is choosing mommy again. And Lilibear and Ji-Ae and where the fuck does that leave me at?

Fuck it.

Just like anyone else, she is leaving. It’s just a matter of time before she articulates the news to me.

“I really wish that we can talk …” she mutters but I cut her sharp and quick. “No, please. Just drive”

From my peripheral vision, I see hurt spreading all over her face. “Chaeng” she calls again. Her hands grab the steering wheel loosely.

“You know we need to talk” her voice grows heavy before she tilts her head to really look at me.

“I know we really need to head back” I supply nonchalantly, trying to act as if I don’t get where she is heading. “Because I need to take a bath and sleep”

“Chaeyoung” mama sighs, her chest deflating. “I know you understand where this is going”

“I don’t” I say sharply. “Please” I tilt my head to look outside the window. “Just drive”

I thought we were going home. But damn I was wrong. She took me to the hospital instead.

“Chaeyoungie” my piglet of a little sister emerges in her stupid banana shorts with exceptional, big, fat DIOR word printed on the elastic waistband.

And a tight, black - shirt that is unable to hide her protruding round belly full of fat. Her hair is still the short, funny bob and she has blue glasses now stuck on the bridge of her nose.

A pair of Louis Vuitton white sneakers cover her tiny little feet as she approaches me lazily with a small, unopened strawberry yoghurt in hand. “Look, mommy bought me this.

She didn’t buy one for you” she says, sticking her tongue out. “Well, I don’t even want to eat if she bought one for me” I fight her back and the baby snickers before making a funny face at me. “Yeah, but she didn’t. So you can’t eat”

“I don’t even want to eat it in the first place”

“But we can share" Ji - Ae offers as she sits on the chair next to me. But because the piglet has short legs, she struggles to sit down properly on the chair that is a bit higher than her own height.

Or a lot higher, to be honest.

"Chaeyoungie"

Her lower lip is wedged behind her upper teeth as she gives me a puppy eyes look that i really hate. Because it always works on me although I always hope that it won't.

"What?"

I sigh, uncrossing my arms over my chest. "Help me"

She sticks her arms and I curse myself mentally as I stand up and lift her up to sit on the chair comfortably. "Stop wiggling around, you can fall"

I warn her because knowing Ji-Ae, she won't make it past a second without moving her limbs mindlessly, vibing to whatever shitty songs she has found on TikTok.

"L is for the way you look at me"

The baby starts to croon and I really feel like strangling her to death right now.

That was the same song mommy used to sing to me and Lili when we were around Ji-Ae's age.

Bet she still sings that damn song to Lili now except for me. Because what we share is hardly love anymore.

"O is for the only one I see"

She continues to sing as she struggles to open the lid of her yoghurt. "Chaeyoungie"

She whines again, pouting her lips as she points the unopened yoghurt in her fat hand. "Open it for me please"

"I don't want" I say. "Why don't you just go and ask Lilinear to open it for you?"

"You're funny" Ji-Ae giggles. "Lilibear is sleeping. She's sick. That's why she's in hospital, Chaeyoungie"

"You think I don't know that?"

I frown at her. "I'm older than you. I know things Ji-Ae"

"Yeah, but you're not as smart as me"

"You don't even go to school"

"I used to. But it's boring"

"Whatever, Ji-Ae. I'm not talking to you"

"You don't have to. Just open the yoghurt for me, please"

"You're so annoying"

I grab the yoghurt from her and tear the lid off.

"Yeah," she scrunches her nose. " But you love me so much"

"In your dream"
