Red. All you could see was red. You blocked out the voice of your best friend and colleague from behind you. You didn't care. Finally you could end all of your suffering.

Raising the gun, you pulled the trigger, watching the bullet slice through the man's skull, causing him to fall lip in his restraints. His blood shot from him, some hitting you, but your anger covered everything else up.

Turning back to Steve, you ignored him, walking past him and out of the room to the bathroom across the hall. You placed your gun onto the surface next to the sink. Taking your badge and ID off, putting them with it too.

The door swung open as you turned on one of the taps.

"Y/N," The stern voice called.

"This is the ladies room Steve," you said in a monotonous tone.

"Now isn't the time for you to berate me about rules."

Rather than turning to him, you stared at your blood splattered reflection. Your hand shook as you put it into the flow of water.

Steve gripped your wrist, turning you away from the water to stare at him.

"You killed a man in cold blood. Why? That isn't you. You don't kill people, people who are pointing a gun at you, let alone a man in handcuffs," He said looking concerned.

"He was guilty. He would have gotten off scot-free and I couldn't handle that. I can't handle that bastard ever walking this earth again," You growled.

You tried to pull yourself away from him, but his grip was firm, but not painful.

"Why? You need to tell me Y/N. You killed a man. You could lose your job, you could be imprisoned. I can't help you, if I don't know why."

Quickly you pulled away from him taking several steps away from him.

"Don't act all high and might Rogers. You've killed people, people with families, Fathers, Mothers. Only due to the emblem on their shoulders. Some of them were innocent people, but because they were HYDRA you saw it as your right to murder them," You hissed.

"They were evil people Y/N. They were HYDRA, they deserved their fate," He retorted.

"So all of HYDRA is evil?"

He nodded.

"Bucky. He was HYDRA. He had no choice, he did not agree with their plans or their motives, but he did whatever they said. There are surely others brainwashed or forced to act for them, without any agreement to what they are doing. And their families. Their friends. They lost someone because you killed them. We are the same Steve, but at least I can admit I took a life," You growled at him.

"You're as bad as they are."

"No. They kill without motive. They kill people who have children, have partners, parents, loved ones. They kill for the thrill of it. That isn't what I did."

He ran a hand through his hair.

"Then why?"

"He killed my sister. She was a toddler, she was innocent and pure, and he killed her for the fun of it. Every night I see the life leaving her eyes. Her being so terrified. Her so confused, so lost. And she wasn't the only one. He killed children across the country, and finally those families can be given comfort in knowing it will never happen to anyone ever again. And before you call me a hypocrite, he wasn't married, he had no children, his parents died years ago and for all I could find, he was a loner. No one will miss him," You said as your voice broke whilst tears fell from your eyes.

Steve looked confused for a second before he moved forward to wrap his arms around you, holding you close to his chest.

"I'm so sorry."

"You have no reason to be sorry Steve," You whispered, "I will have it on my conscience that I killed him, but I will also have it on my conscience that I saved many children from the same fate as my sister."
