Chapter 9: Spencer’s POV

We arrive at my house. I could tell Toby was nervous. Nobody was home as usual. I was kind of scared. But Toby was different. Different than I thought he would be…I open the fridge to get some food out while he awkwardly stands near the front door.

“Sit down, please, on the couch.”

“No, I’m fine,” he replies. “I really should be going.”

“Oh,” I mutter to my dismay. “Please stay a while? We can have some fun! Play some board games? Trivia? SCRABBLE!” I yell excitedly. Suddenly, my tears are gone.

“Nah, I’m fine,” he replies. Toby sits down on one of the kitchen chairs. “I’m sorry I made you cry,” he tells me. His tone sounds ashamed.

I look down. He didn’t make me cry. I made myself cry. “Yeah, I don’t really let myself cry in front of anyone,” I tell him.

“Me neither,” he replies. He smiles at me and then grabs my hand. His hand is so warm and gentle to my surprise. I stare into his eyes and then we ----
