“You seem worried,” Gerard says and I raise an eyebrow at him, watching him sitting beside me on the couch with a slice of pizza in one hand and a beer in the other. His question attracts Mikey and Ray’s attention, though I doubt the two haven’t already noticed the said worry so far; they just observe us from the opposite couch, also eating.

I hum, glancing at the neglected TV before adjusting my posture. “Just lost my last job,” I breathe and reach for a slice of pizza. “Kid said they got better at school, but I found out they actually got another tutor, so… yeah.” I shrug. “I’m not mad at them or anything, tho, just… disappointed, dunno, I wonder what I did wrong, if I wasn’t good enough or whatever. Or maybe the prices weren’t good. I wish their mother had said anything, at least.” The questions have been hammering my brain for way too long – I sigh, taking a bite of the slice.

“Damn, dude!” Ray frowns, demonstrating a bit more sympathy than the others, but I know all of them care about me all the same. “Sorry about that. You work with tutoring, right?” I nod. “I’m sure you’ll find a job again soon enough. Like, not gonna lie, there are more than a few kids sinking in school,” he breathes a chuckle, inducing immediate laughter from everyone else because we were pretty much like that until a few time ago.

“Not exactly a good thing, but I agree,” I snort, shaking my head to myself.

“But think,” Mikey says with a side grin, “you wouldn’t be gaining money if they weren’t sinking in school.”

“Yeah, but–”

“Shhh,” Gerard interrupts me, wrapping an arm around my torso and resting his head on my shoulder. “Forget about it for now, alright? We’re here just to hang out. We’ll help you sort everything out later, trust us.” He buries his face in my neck lightly, sighing – I can’t help but to roll my eyes at him and inevitably agree, wrapping an arm around Gerard and pressing a kiss to his head, finally averting my attention to the low quality horror movie until now neglected by us.

Teaching or tutoring wasn’t something I ever wanted to do until some years ago, probably halfway through high-school. My mother had gotten me in a sort of school that gave reinforcement classes and, surprisingly enough, I ended up getting, in the manager’s words, excellent, though I think she was exaggerating it so she could have me as an extra teacher. Extra ninety dollars are extra ninety dollars, after all, so of course I agreed.

This was the trigger, I believe, that led to me finding myself offering tutoring halfway through college once my spending demanded more.

A sigh escapes my lips as I run my eyes over the page of my notebook and shake my head to myself, watching the pen’s scribbles slowly turn into another divisory. It’s more depressing than it should be, to be honest.

Maybe I’ll miss the kid – I don’t know, I don’t exactly care about it –, but I keep wondering what really made their mother decide to give up on me. I guess my job was too expensive… or maybe not; I remember the kid having a persistent problem involving English topics and I wish I had helped them better. Hell, I must be some sort of masochist to keep torturing myself so intensely over this. What really should be my focus right now is finding a new job because that kid is already water under the bridge.
