"Bucky" you called out, looking around the empty training room of the Avengers tower years ago and spotting the shirtless super soldier kicking the shit out of a punching bag

Once he recognised your voice, he immediately stopped and looked over to you with a smile as he moved his hair out of his face

"Hey, Y/N. You okay?" he asked as you came closer to him, making him wipe the sweat off his face on a small, white towel on a bench behind him

You came to a stop in front of him and reached out to hold his real hand, shaking your head as a response

He instantly panicked and put his free, metal hand gently on your cheek and spoke again "What's wrong? Did someone say something to you?"

"Yeah. You did" you replied with a pained expression

"What? What did I say that's upset you?" he asked, now removing his hand from your face

"You told me that we would have a normal life, that we could be just like the people we save every day" you said with a tear in your eye

He let out a soft sigh at this and hoped to God that you wouldn't let that tear fall, as he couldn't stand seeing you upset

"When the world is calmer and safer, then we can try to give ourselves what we want" he said calmly

"We're Avengers, I thought the world was already safer with us around"

"I meant when it's safer for us - when the world no longer needs The Avengers"

"That's never going to happen, James"

When you said his first name, he knew that you were very upset, so he tried to keep himself together for you and maintained his calm and reassuring tone

"Trust me, we'll get our chance. I just wish it'll come soon" he said, trying his best to make you feel better

But, you were slightly confused as to why he wanted what you did, so you simply asked "Why?"

"Because I don't know how much longer I can do this for- denying you something that I know you desperately want" he paused to wrap his arm around your waist, bringing you closer and making the conversation much more intimate

"I want more than ever for you to be happy, but while we're fighting every day for not just our lives, but billions of others too, I'm sorry, I love you more than anything in the entire universe, but I just can't let myself give you the life you deserve when one of us could easily die during it"
