It was coming to the end of the year, and every year you would spend New Year's with your family

This year was no different- your parents and siblings called to make sure you were going over, but a certain super soldier had other plans for you

You didn't know this, but he didn't have anywhere to go - everyone else in the tower had family or friend's places they could go to to spend it with them, but Bucky? He had no one

No one except you, but you were going away, and again, Bucky was going to be left alone

He hated this, he hated having no one to spend time with, especially at events like this

People always expected him to find someone special to accompany him, but you didn't know that he had already found someone special- you

Because everyone else had someone to spend New Year's with the tower was empty apart from you and Bucky, and this confused you slightly

As you walked through the tower, you didn't expect anyone to be there, so you jumped when you saw Bucky sat at the kitchen table with his head in his hands and his leg bouncing quickly

"Bucky? How come you're still here? Are you okay?" You asked all at once, making him look up quickly and asked you "Do you have to go?"

This question took you by surprise, because he put a lot of emotion into it, and his face was full of hope

"Yeah, why?" You simply answered, making the hope disappear from his face as he looked down again

"Oh" he said before he stood up and started walking away "Okay" he mumbled, but you heard him and you managed to get a hold of his wrist before he got away from you

"Bucky, are you okay?" You asked, still holding his wrist

He turned around after a short pause and looked at you sadly before speaking again "I'm always okay, doll"

That was when you realised that he was wearing casual, comfy clothes instead of clothes that you would wear to an event like you were, so you asked him "Do you have anywhere to go tonight?"

As you spoke, you put your hand on his face, and the way he leaned into it and closed his eyes answered your question for you "Well, do you wanna come with me? I'm sure my family will welcome another person" you said, inviting him to go with you

He just laughed and said "You do realise who I am, right? If you told them that Bucky Barnes, The Winter Soldier, was coming over, then they would flip out just like everyone else"

You nodded your head to the side and said "That's true" but another question quickly came out of your mouth "When was the last time you ever spent New Year's with someone who cared about you?"

He signed and said "I always used to spend it with Steve, but I've reassured him that I have someone to spend it with while he goes with Nat to Sam's. I don't and I hate being alone. The last time I spent it with someone was probably when 1944 turned into 1945, because that was the year I fell off the train"

You looked at him with sympathy and confusion "Why didn't you go with Steve, Nat and Sam tonight if you hate being alone?"

"Well, I-I just- uhh-" he stuttered before you reached forward and held his right hand with your left and stroked his cheek with your thumb, as your other hand was still on his face

This calmed him down a bit as he looked down at the floor between the two of you

It was also then that he realised he had different colour socks on lmao

"People always tell me that I need to find someone special and close to my heart. The problem is that I've found somebody, but she's always talking to her friends and making plans with others in advance, so I can't really do anything about it. I'm surprised that she's stood here talking to me instead of meeting her family for New Year's"

You were caught off guard and his words made you step back, completely disconnecting yourself from him

"Bucky, I..." You sighed again and looked down like he did

You had to go to your family, they were all waiting for you, it was a tradition that you didn't want to break "I'm sorry"

His eyes widened as you turned around "Y/N, wait" he said quickly

You started walking quickly so that you didn't hurt him even more as you said "I'm gonna be late if I don't go now"

You then felt a pair of strong arms wrap around your shoulders from behind, holding you in place, as a head was placed face down on your shoulder

Then you heard a desperate voice that said "Y/N, please don't go"

Bucky held you tighter as he spoke, making you feel guilty about leaving him there, but you had to, you had plans

"Bucky, let me go" you replied, starting to think that he needed you more than your family did

As a response, you felt his hands grip your shirt, almost ripping it as he spoke again, but quieter this time "Please don't leave me again"

His reaction almost made you give in to him, so you paused and thought about who you wanted to spend this time with

Sure enough, the answer to your question was Bucky

When you didn't reply to him, he let out a little whisper "Stay"

Vision feels-

This made you smile and try to turn around, luckily, Bucky realised this, so he loosened his grip on you and brought his head up off your shoulder

When you did turn around, you put both hands on his face after brushing some of his hair out of it so you could see him better "You won't be alone anymore"

He still kept hold of you as he stumbled over his words again "I-umm- T-thank you, Y/N" he looked so grateful and happy that he was going to be able to see the year into the next with someone special for the first time since 1944, that you smiled back at him

That's when the two of you started leaning closer to each other, and because of the position you were in, it was very tempting to kiss him, as all you had to do was raise your head a bit

But, the sound of your phone ringing in your pocket scared both of you, and made Bucky let go of you so that you could take the call

You smiled apologetically at him and he nodded in understanding, letting you walk away and speak to whoever was on the other end

"Hello?" You asked, waiting for a reply

"Y/N-" it was your F/M "-Where are you?" they asked quickly making you nervous

"Oh, yeah. Sorry, F/M/N, I can't make it, I've just remembered that I have plans with someone" you replied, looking down at your feet

"What? Who can be more important than us? We're your family, Y/N" they replied with an irritated tone, making you reply with a roll of your eyes

"I know, but these plans with Bucky are important to both of us" you said

Recognizing the name, F/M/N started asking loads of questions that they didn't give time for you to answer "Bucky? Who's Bucky? Who exactly are you spending New Year's with?"

Then, you looked at Bucky with his unmatching socks, who was now sliding around awkwardly on the kitchen floor with his hands in his pockets, making you smile and reply

"Someone special"
