Steve was one of the very few people in the Avengers Compound that was handling his friends' deaths relatively well

You on the other hand, you broke down for five goddamn years and you never moved on

You couldn't, if you moved on from Bucky, you would never be able to forgive yourself

Steve knew this, but he walked around the empty building for a bit until he decided that you shouldn't be alone right now, and that you needed a friend

"Hey, Jarvis?" he asked out loud, and was answered by Tony's trusty AI

"Yes, Captain Rogers?" he said, awaiting his orders

"You wouldn't happen to know where Y/N is, would you?" He asked, scratching the back of his neck

"I do, Miss Y/L/N is in her room. She is still extremely upset about Sergeant Barnes's death, should I tell her you're looking for her?" he asked, trying to be more helpful

"If she knows I'm coming, she might try and cover up the fact that she's upset, so no. Thanks, Jarvis" he replied, making his way now to your room

"My pleasure, Captain, and do try and cheer her up. I miss her" was the last thing he said before going silent once again and left Steve to find you, after he quietly replied "So do I" with a nod of his head

He walked down the many corridors, looking out of the windows at the outside world and thinking about how everyone else in it was feeling the same way as you were

He knew that he couldn't help everyone, but he knew that he could at least help you, so he walked a bit faster until he got to your slightly ajar door

The sounds of his best friend crying filled his ears as he felt a sadness inside him that he wouldn't let consume him like you had

You saw your door open fully, but you didn't bother trying to wipe your tears away, instead, you just looked back down at the framed photo in your hands

Tears fell onto the glass of the frame, but you didn't wipe them away

"Y'know, I'd offer to cook you dinner, but.. You seem pretty miserable already" Steve's voice filled the room, as you looked up at him, clutching the frame tighter

When his eyes met your face, he swore he heard his heart shatter into a million pieces

He knew how much you loved Bucky, but he didn't know how much his death was affecting you

Before he could say anything else, however, you spoke up with a shaky voice and said "It's been 5 years... It's ridiculous that I'm still crying over him", as you returned your eyes back to the framed photo in your hands

Steve stopped leaning on the doorframe and walked towards you, took a seat on your bed next to you and said "Hey, it's not ridiculous. People handle grief in different ways, and if it takes you this long to accept it, that's okay. Even if you can never accept it, that's okay too. What matters is that you haven't forgotten about him and all the memories you had together"

As he spoke, he put his hand on your shoulder and turned his full body to you

"Really?" You said, now turning to face him with furrowed eyebrows
