Waitress: What'll it be?

Mariella: I'll just have a cup of coffee.

Tyler and Veronica order as the waitress smiles, taking our menus.

Veronica: Just coffee? You sure that's all you want?

I nod.

Mariella: Yeah. If I want a quick bite, I'll just pick off your plate.

She makes a "get your own" face.

Tyler: That reminds me, when do you start back at the Cafe?

Mariella: Monday. But, the manager hired someone new, so I'm not sure how my hours are going to look when I get back. I may get less days..

Veronica: Isn't that a good thing?

Mariella: Not if I want to save up to buy my own car.

They both agree, glancing at one another.

Tyler: That's true. You know, you can always call me if you need a ride.

I smile at his offer. The waitress comes back with a cup of coffee in hand.

Waitress: Here you go.

Mariella: Thanks.

She nods, grinning her toothy smile.

Waitress: Your food should be out momentarily.

Tyler takes out his phone, sucking his teeth.

Tyler: I may have to take my food to-go. The panel starts in 15 minutes.

Veronica: You want me to go tell the waitress to pack yours in a box?

Tyler: If you don't mind..

I scoot out of the booth to let Veronica out. I sit back down, bringing the coffee cup to my lips and lightly blowing, before taking a small sip.

Tyler: Don't worry about Sawyer..

This remark came as a shock. I'm surprised I didn't choke or spit my coffee out.

Mariella: Why do you say that? Do I look like I'm worried about him?

Tyler: I know what happened at the hotel, he told me. I'm sure he just feels like an idiot and decided to run away.

Yeah. "Ran away?" From me?

A male waiter comes by with a steaming plate in his hand.

Waiter: Fried eggs, turkey bacon and wheat toast?

I raise my hand, signaling him to place it in front of me. He sets the plate down murmuring "Enjoy". He leaves the table as I continue the conversation.

Mariella: I'm not worried. I just wanted to thank him for the flowers.

Tyler sneaks a tiny nibble of Veronica's toast. He places it neatly back in place like nothing happened.

Tyler: He sent you flowers?

Mariella: Yeah. I guess he bought them last night before he left.

Veronica comes back, setting a white box in front of Tyler. I scoot to the inside of the booth as she takes a seat.

Veronica: You're all set.

He winks at her.

Tyler: Thanks, girl. You two gonna be okay?

Veronica: Yeah. We'll just walk to the convention center.

Tyler: Alright. See ya, later.

Veronica waves as I raise my cup, taking another sip.
