HANAHAKI DISEASE
a disease where a patient begins coughing up flower petals because they have unrequited feelings for someone. it is a slow and painful disease that develops over a span of months, if not years. it grows more intense until the patient is coughing up entire flowers. the only way for the disease to be cured is for the person to return the feelings or through surgery. but with surgery, the feelings disappear along with the petals. if the patient's feelings aren't returned or if they don't get surgery, they will die.
you ecstatically skipped your way towards the volleyball gymnasium. when you swung open the door, the volleyball members greeted you as usual. while you were talking with the captain of the volleyball team, kita shinsuke, you felt a hand ruffle your hair.
"hey, y/n."
you turned around to see atsumu smiling down at you as he held a volleyball in his other hand. his twin brother walked up to you and slapped his brother's hand away from your head.
"hi, y/n," osamu greeted. "can you please do something with this idiot? he won't stop complaining about this one girl from his chemistry class."
"SAMU!!" atsumu yelled. "since when did i-"
you were childhood friends with the famous miya twins, and you've always been supporting them on their volleyball journey. with your parents close to theirs, it was a daily routine to go over to their house and play volleyball with them when you were little. you were used to their daily bickering and arguments. oftentimes, you would join in with their disagreements. they viewed you as a sibling, someone they could rant to, complain to, and support from the bottom of their heart.
but you found yourself falling for one of your childhood friends, miya osamu.
you laughed as osamu kicked atsumu's thigh. the usual bickering began while kita and you continued talking about the strategies for the upcoming volleyball game. you were well respected in inarizaki's volleyball club due to your organization and strategic thinking. there were many times when your strategies helped them for games.
"y/n!! help!! help!!"
your conversation with kita ended with the loud, agonizing scream coming from the one and only miya atsumu, who was being strangled by his twin brother.
"i swear these boys are mentally four years old," you mumbled as you made your way towards the twins. kita softly smiled. only you could deal with the twin's craziness.
"seriously, you guys are like first graders. stop fighting over the most unnecessary things," you sighed.
"unnecessary y/n? you call 'let's steal miya osamu's rice balls' as unnecessary?" osamu asked.
kita sighed as the miya twins and you started disputing. the rest of the volleyball members were already used to it and continued to practice their drills for an upcoming match. after volleyball practice, you walked home with the miya twins.
"samu!! y/n!! wait for me!!" atsumu yelled as he ran up to the two of you.
"atsumu!! hurry, it's cold!!" you yelled back. you were shivering from the cold and the breeze that flew by made you sneeze. the ground was covered with a thick blanket of snow. the shrubs and trees were stained in white.
osamu threw you his jacket as you sneezed again from the cold. "don't catch a cold, you idiot," he remarked as you quickly zipped up his jacket.
"hehe, thanks," you muttered with a faint blush on your cheeks.
"ha!! this idiot won't catch a cold because idiots don't get sick," atsumu commented as he threw a snowball at your face. you shrieked as the freezing snow slammed onto your face as bits of the snow went into your shirt, making you shiver even more.
"atsumu, what the fuck?!"
you could hear osamu laughing from the side. you bent over to make a snowball with your bare hands, only to get hit in the face once again by osamu. now, the twins were historically laughing as the cold hit you. you stood up from the ground and threw your snowball towards atsumu's face.
"gwah!"
you laughed at atsumu, who was shaking the snow off his hair. the three of you began a snowball fight. as the sun started falling, the three of you were exhausted. you guys laid down on the cold snow and looked up at the sky.
"weren't we going to go home early today?" you asked as a faint fog came out of your lips.
"blame 'tsumu," osamu mumbled as he stood up from the ground. "he was the one that started it. let's go home, the sun's starting to set."
atsumu and you stood up, shivering from the cold. you sneezed from the cold as you swept the snow off you.
"geez, at least wear the jacket properly," osamu muttered as he zipped up the jacket. he slipped on the hood for you and wiped bits of snow off your shoulders. "what are you, a kid?"
"y/n never grows up," atsumu said as he threw another snowball at you. when you were about to comment back at him, you heard a voice coming from behind you.
"osamu?"
the miya twins and you turned towards the voice. a girl with dark brown hair stood in front of you with a smile.
"(random girl's name)? what are you doing here?" osamu asked as he walked over to her,
leaving atsumu and you confused.
"oh, the student council meeting just ended, so i was going to go home. what about you?"
"we were just going to go home too. i'll walk you home," he suggested. "it's getting dark so it'll be dangerous for you to walk home alone. 'tsumu, y/n, i'm going to go walk (random girl's name) home so you guys go ahead of me."
you felt something growing inside your throat as you nodded. atsumu dragged you away from osamu. the walk home was filled with silence as you felt something painful emerging from the bottom of your throat.
"y/n, you good? you're usually never this quiet," atsumu commented. you slowly nodded as you wrapped your fingers around your throat. atsumu looked at you weirdly.
"are you sure?"
you suddenly grabbed onto his sleeves as you crouched down onto the ground and started coughing violently. you felt a piercing throb in your throat as you tried coughing out.
"y/n?" atsumu was starting to get worried.
you squeezed his sleeves stronger as you felt something tear in your throat, and suddenly drops of blood came spilling out of your lips. atsumu's eyes widened as you continued coughing. but this time, red flower petals came twirling out of your mouth with stains of blood covering them. you slowly let go of his sleeves as you felt your body getting cold. the snow was stained with red.
atsumu noticed you shivering as a trail of blood was still trickling down your lips. he picked you up and carried you on his back, sprinting home as you continued coughing. you felt your eyelids getting heavy as the cold breeze hit you. you laid your head on atsumu's back and felt your head getting hazy.
"y/n, it's okay. it's going to be okay."
a small smile curved up as you fell unconscious and got swarmed by darkness.
