Krithika twitched with pain, "Amma, yen kai...", she cried and requested her mother to leave her.

Other ladies of her family had stepped down from the balcony and stood near the hallway, watching the drama unfold.

Satya stepped in between Xavier and Saranya, trying to calm her, "Aunty, neenge kovam--"

Raising her palm, she silenced Satya, "Neenge pesathinge.", she seethed, "Last time when you both had come here to talk to my husband, I had trusted you guys and had felt that finally, my Kannamma could have the life I dreamt for her.", glancing back at Xavier, she persisted with stern resolve, "But you have ruined everything!"

Her words resonated with such unwavering determination that for one fleeting second, Xavier entertained the notion that he might have ruined everything for Krithika.

But he snapped out of it when Krithika shouted, "Amma!", she twisted her arm as she yelled, "I love Xavi--"

Before she could finish her statement, Xavier was startled by a sharp noise, and he saw Krithika clutching her cheek, crying out in pain.

Saranya had hit her daughter.

All his patience evaporated in thin air. Blood gushed in his arteries as he watched his love wailing. He couldn't stand still and pushed Satya aside to reach out to his Kanmani.

With unbelievable- and unnecessary- strength, he yanked off Saranya's hand to free Krithika from her hold and sheathed his darling in his arms, close to his body, "She could be your daughter but I will never tolerate the love of my life being treated like this.", he thundered, "I didn't come here to sit through your abuse. Don't you fucking dare to do that to my wife again!"

Krithika tightly clutched him, still sobbing as she chanted, "No Xav, please Xav."

Shocked by the charge of Xavier, Saranya recoiled, her eyes welling up with tears, "I... I wasn't... I didn't intend to... Oh, my Kannamma!", her trembling hands advanced to hold her baby.

Xavier roared, "No!" and swatted her hands away with blunt force.

Saranya quivered.

"Mama, what are you doing!?", Karthik shielded his mother, "Mr. Joseph, please calm down!"

Xavier was gasping, heaving for air, adrenaline pumped high in his blood as he tried to protect Krithika. It had happened too fast for him to be aware of the situation; it was the fight response. His eyes had focused only on the hands of Saranya and he had acted involuntarily. He felt a hand on his arm and found Krishna holding him.

"Xav, deep breaths.", Satya whispered to him, her hand patting his chest, "Everything is fine, Krithika is not hurt."

This was the first time that Xavier had been rash. Throughout his entire life, he had never shown disrespect towards any elderly person or woman. His Aai had fed his brain with all the gentleman qualities and he had followed it like the Bible. He could have been anything but never a monster; he wasn't his Achan.

"Bollocks!", Farhan exclaimed, clapping his hands in excitement as if he was waiting for a flicker of violence to show up, "And here I thought it was the old sod who's gotta be a problem."

"Fuck off!", Satya snarled.

Keeping his calm posture, "Satty darling, I won't.", he walked close to them, particularly closer to Krithika's mother.

"I wanna talk to you...", Farhan waved at Krithika's mother, "Sorry, I didn't catch your name; no not the Mrs. Ashok one. I don't like to address women by other's identity, you ladies deserve more than being handled like some commodity.", in an endeavor to lessen his pronounced British accent and revert to his native Indian tone- a task not particularly challenging for him- for clearer communication with Saranya, he smiled warmly at her, "Please, may I know your name?"

"Saranya.", she whispered, her eyes full of tears as they rolled down her cheeks uncontrollably. Karthik hugged her in an attempt to comfort her.

Farhan's smile widened, "Saranya, isn't that a beautiful name for a gorgeous lady like you?", certainly, he could shun his accent but not his flirtatious nature.

Horrified, Saranya stared at the miscreant who dared to flirt with her- a woman significantly older than himself.
