"Karthik!"

Krithika ran to her brother and hugged him, "Dei, what are you doing here?"

"Nothing about how I am or how's my life going?", Karthik retorted while shaking his head, "You are bothered by my presence here in your holy hostel?"

Smiling at him, she gently slapped his cheek, "Ae, poda!", she chided, "You didn't inform me that you'll be here in Chennai, I am just surprised."

Karthik Ashok, her only brother was nothing like her when it came to looks. Towering over her with a height of five feet eight inches, having a light brown complexion and soft wavy hair with a beautiful pair of large black eyes, he justified the name of Lord Murugan, the handsome man.

Not just his physical appearance, he did justify the name 'Karthik' as well, as he was a funny fellow who made a merry environment around him, he was the one who was bestowed with happiness and shared it selflessly with everyone.

"Amma sent you these sweets.", he pushed a steel tiffin box to her, "She tried to call you on your birthday, but it seems like always you didn't concern yourself by answering it."

Shutting her mouth tight, she started fiddling her fingers with the ends of her kurti. Was she still bitter about how her mother had been quiet the entire time when her father had hurled insults and called her names about how worthlessly disdainful of a daughter she was? Yes, absolutely yes.

She had needed one person to support her dreams, to stand with her, and she had expected no one but her mother to be her backbone. Alas, it had been nothing but a joke when she had looked at her Amma's face while wailing and her mother had done nothing but turn her back to her.

That day was etched on her mind, a core memory to never trust anyone, as even the human who brought her into this world had backstabbed her and had thrown her away to struggle. She would never forgive or forget that.

But you trust Xavier?

He has earned it.

Karthik pulled her hand in his, "She's bound by society and people, Akka.", his fingers tried to calm her, "Her husband is her world, don't punish her for choosing her life over yours. It's survival for her."

Snatching her hand from his grasp, "If you are here to vouch for her betrayal, then I would like to say that please stop with your bullshit.", she muttered, "The only thing that Appa hasn't done to her or me, is abuse physically or sexu---"

"Akka...", Karthik cut her, "Appa is not a great man, I agree, but he isn't vile."

She scoffed, "The prince doesn't know about the cruelty of the king, he's nothing but a father to him, Karthik.", blinking her eyes she tried not to cry, "How about we don't talk about them?"

"Sure, whatever my Akka wants.", Karthik gave her his brightest smile, so genuine that it reached his eyes, and she wondered how her ogre father gave birth to such a gentle son. He slapped her shoulder, "Get ready, we can go to the beach. That's what your Saturday schedule calls for, right?"

"Do I not look ready to you?", she scrunched her nose, "These are my decent outfits. Don't start with your speech about how I should reconsider my wardrobe choices."

"I won't, I am used to you being beautifully ugly.", he winked and received a light punch from Krithika.

He chuckled, causing her to smile, "I missed you."

"I missed you.", he made a cry-baby face and mimicked her, "Nonsense. I know you want to get rid of me, but sorry Akka, I have to tell you this, I am a permanent parasite in your life. You'll have to bear this leech forever."

A/N

I have no siblings, and never had a great bond with any of my cousins. But, after growing up I got a few friends who are now my life. I don't think I can imagine my life without them. They define sibling bonds for me.

To all those sibling-like friendships!
