"Krithika, hope you are feeling comfortable?", Satya's concerned voice made Krithika look at her, "Dhanya is a bit adamant.", she gave her an apologetic smile.

"What did I do?", Dhanya who was busy chatting with her Xavi squinted her eyes, "Krithika looks like a princess, I used my magic."

Okay, this kid is out to embarrass me.

Xavier grinned, his dimples prominently punching into his cheeks, "Yeah, she surely looks like a princess.", she noticed the emphasis on the last word and blushed furiously, "I can't believe you did that, sweetie."

Please stop grinning!

After the pooja, all four of them were gathered to have lunch together. Earlier, Krithika had requested to leave but Satya had insisted to join them, along with Dhanya who kept flashing her puppy eyes. And here they were, chatting and eating their meal together.

"By the way, you didn't go to your home?", Xavier looked curious, "I know you love Satya but this is just getting out of hand."

Satya glared at him. He shrugged, "I am just being honest, the girl adores you."

Dhanya chortled making Krithika squirm. This wasn't how she had expected her 'Happy Pongal' to be. She shoved the Sambar Sadam into her mouth and realized that the food tasted quite exquisite.

Okay, you can just focus on the meal. The meal on your plate, not the delectable man--

Apathy!

It was just too stupid. The whole 'apathy' bullshit wasn't working. She wanted the attraction to fade away, her tiny treasure box to be banned and thrown in a faraway land. And it was getting difficult with each passing second, especially when Xavier sat next to her like a rogue Dravidian hunk. Why was he feeding her subconscious with a new set of images? Did he have to look so hot in that elegant vesti-shirt?

The chain over his neck, that flawless caramel skin...your lips should be there...

"Remember when we went to Chettipalayam last year?", Satya motioned to Xavier, clearly breaking Krithika's subconscious thoughts, her mind dancing Bharatanatyam with Xavier and alluring him to kiss her.

"Yeah, that crazy old bast--"

"He is my father.", Krithika rushed, cutting Xavier's comment.

"Oh, I am so sorry.", Xavier sobered, "I didn't know that...", he trailed off, trying to gauge her reaction.

"It is what it is.", she accepted in a dejected tone, "I avoid going home until it's a necessity or emergency. It's been three years now. Last year he wanted to marry me off to some random son of his business partner...when I had joined the Xhasis."

She felt overwhelmed. Her eyes were focused on her plate of food as her fingers scribbled over Sambar and fried Vazhaka.

Were they feeling pity for her? She wanted to stop sharing anything more.

"Well, it's good that he doesn't have to spend his precious money on me anymore.", she giggled trying to make a joke out of her pathetic father-daughter relationship.

There was a silence, a very nerve-wracking silence. She wanted it to vanish. She wanted to hide in a corner and cocoon in her stupid trauma, it was too much to share with anyone.

Her head tilted to look at Xavier and his eyes were sparkling gold, they held something warm in them, as if he cared about what she had just said. His expression was soft and gentle, looking at her with such genuine concern. It looked like he wanted to comfort her. But why would he even want to comfort her?

She was just a random employee working under him, a woman who was attracted to him, a woman who had nothing but thrown herself on him and kissed him. He shouldn't be concerned about such a woman.

"Some fathers.", he muttered, sounding slightly painful.

Inhaling slowly, she tried to not put much thought into his words. Not getting worked up, not to think about what could have been his relationship with his parents. Not be involved in any matter where he was concerned. It was a bloody dangerous path and she wanted to re-route her thoughts.

Apathy...apathy...apathy...

After that, they all ate in silence, no more funny adventures of a hyper-excited teenager or trauma-sharing by a mid-twenty's woman or anything at all.

Until someone cleared their throat, "I was thinking of playing chess after lunch. What do you think, Xavi?"

I guess I have changed the home town of Krithika some twenty times before deciding on Chettipalayam. I wanted it to be near Thiruppur, as her father has a flourishing textile business but wanted it to be a small town and not very rural. Google helped me with the selection XD
