NIV: Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
NCV:
So, dear children, keep yourselves away from false gods.
Meaning: Dont get pulled into the crowd and follow other idols and God's. God tells us he is the one and only. And one of the 10 commandments is do not worship any other idol except for him. Dont let anything get in the way of your relationship with God. These things can include sports, friends, video games, phones/laptops, books, money. You have to find time to make room for God. I tell myself this, "if i dont make room for God, he wont make room for me when I need him." I find if you stop making time for him you start to drift away ans your relationship will weaken. God obviously doesnt want that, but you not keeping a steady relationship with him.
The story of the lost son in the bible (Luke 15:1-10-32) reminds me of this verse. This story is about how a son asked his father for all his inheritance now. So the father gave him it. He ran off and spent it unwisely and for stuff that was not useful. This money was his idol and he let it get in the way of God. Once it was all gone and he had nothing left he realized the situation he was stuck in and ran back to God and his father. The moral of this story was don't worship things besides God. No matter how good jt might make you feel at the moment, it will not stay like that forever. Only God can make you complete, and he will stay with you forever, unlike all the other fake idols!
I thought it was Friday tomorrow and then i realized it wasnt...but God will help me through the rest of the week and he can help you too :)
