[the 29th of December]

The taxi driver was gawking stupidly, watching the well-dressed young man rush towards an alley, barred by some torn remnants of police tape warning "CRIME SCENE DO NOT CROSS CRIME SCENE", and disappearing into a random sex shop  of all places  –  at least the neon signs outside claimed so. It was almost 8 a.m., and he sleepily thought that nothing should be surprising him in this damned city any more.

The nice thing was that the tall man did not dally, and was soon back, looking somehow pleased, and barked a new address now  –  an address downtown that gave him hope for a nice fat tip.

They arrived about 15 minutes later, and Lan Xichen checked his phone  –  it was still so very early that he could afford a cup of coffee. Opening his wallet, he took out a couple of banknotes, by sheer force of habit, but, remembering his Wanyin's sulking face, he smiled and put one of those back. It was perhaps a new habit forming, he did not care  -  he liked it.

He really wanted  –  the very next time such a thing happened  –  to see his lover's smile or smirk, instead of the inevitable argument and sulking. Still, the driver looked pleased, and so the day was starting off OK, and this was good.

He wanted to keep busy, as busy as possible, so that he would not think about the future sadness in Jiang Cheng's eyes tonight, when they were going to say their goodbyes to each other.
