Chapter 1: Wishful thinking

"What's up with you Kai? I asked my son. I've been busy for the last few weeks taking care of business and we haven't been able to practice. I decided to let him chill tonight but its going down.

"Just tired" he yawned before taking a bite of his pizza. "We don't get tired around here, you think Kobe got sleep? I asked him.

"Uh yea, how do you think humans survive? he said. "No shit" I laughed. "But you get what I mean, we don't get tired round here" I said smiling at him. "I'm just playing, imma let you off too but Tuesday you on that court" I said.

"Okay dad" he said. "What else is new? I asked. "Ummm I have this homework project. I have to make a collage, science board or PowerPoint about my family" he explained. "Oh okay sounds fun" I said looking at him. I could tell there was something on his mind, something was bothering him.

"Dad you ever..... Nevermind" he said. "I ever what? I asked raising my brow.

"Nothing never mind" he said.

"Ever what say that shit" I begged now being curious. "Nothing, nothing, nothing" he said. "Pshhhhh you youngins" I said.

"Its also a parent, student project coming up that's 50% of my grade" he explained

"Oh forreal? Well you know your moms and I will help, anything to get my young bull an A" I said

"You hear from Anthony? He asked. Anthony is my girlfriend's son. Him and Kai are close, she's a teacher at there middle school. That's how I got with Angel in the first place. Anthony is always around he's kind of like my second son. Angel is always co-parenting with her son's father and surprisingly everyone gets along with everybody. I looked at the time

"Alright let's wrap this up" I said throwing away our food.

I was finally finished my 60 question multiple choice class that I nearly died on. My phone finally lit up, it was a FaceTime call from from Davon. I quickly picked up the phone "Hey baby" I smiled.

"Hi love, how are you? He asked. "I'm fine just a little lonely over here" I frowned looking at him. "Aww you miss daddy" he laughed. "Yeah I do, I called you earlier but you didn't answer" I said

"Oh yeah babe, I had a meeting" he explained. I squinted my eyes a little "but that was around 6 and you said your meetings ended everyday " I explained what I remembered. "They added another last minute meeting babe" he laughed. "Hmmm, okay I'll leave it alone but I do miss you. When are you coming home? I asked.

"I'll be home Friday" he said. Davon lived with us and he has been another male figure in Makai's life. Rashad and I make sure he has all the role models he can get we don't want our boy to be another statistic. Although Davon is apart of Makai's life, Makai doesn't really care for it but he plays it off well. Makai is very over protective over me and will probably never like anyone dating me unless its his father. He still wants us together and we both explain to him that, that will never happen.

Makai walked in on our conversation. "Baby I'll call you back" I said quickly hanging up our conversation was kind of going left if you know what I mean. "Hey kid" I said

"Sup moms" he said placing his book bag done. "When is Mr. Davon coming home? He asked. I looked at him funny since when did he care about Davon's whereabouts. "He'll be home Friday" I ensured

"Sure, sure he's not with his little side bitches" he said. My eyes widened "Excuse me? I asked getting up from the table. "What did you say to me? I asked.
