IGOR WAS STANDING ON THE EDGE OF THE FENCE, watching prisoners work when I found him. He had heard me coming and had reached through the wire fence. I took his hand immediately and the world was just two of us. The fence in between was a minor inconvenience.
     "You know?" he asked.
"I was preparing the house to leave if we had to. Verity got my scent and found out," I explained.
He sighed and we both rested our heads against the fence, it felt like our heads were touching through the wire.
"I don't know what to do, Miss Elizabeth," he whispered. "Go and fight for this bastard, or take you and Verity and just run."
"We will follow you whichever you decide, Igor, you know that."
"I'm so sorry I've dragged you into this." I was shaking my head before he finished his sentence. I wished there wasn't this stupid mortal fence in the way so I could make him stop talking by force. "Verity, too. If I hadn't wanted to come to my homeland, none of this would have happened and we wouldn't be facing this issue."
"Enough of that," I said. "None of this is your fault. You didn't start this war."
"What do I do, Miss Elizabeth?"
"We can always kill Adolf now, change our names and disappear. We're good at that."
I had hoped he would at least have a small chuckle at my words, but there was nothing. Of course, this was a grave, serious matter. There would be no laughing until we were safe.
"Or, you can go fight. Rug up like you are, gloves, jacket, and you fight, you protect those worthy of protection and if you, if you believe that things are getting out of hand... I don't want to say this, but kill them."
I heard Verity's steps approaching and we both turned to face her.
When she came into view I was surprised by her sad expression. If I hadn't been so desperate to keep hold of Igor I would have run to her.
"Go, Dad. Please. We will go with you, of course, meet you there. But they've sent him as well. Johann is going as well and he's too good for any of this. You know that. You both know that. Johann Roehm is too good for this war. Please-"
"You want me to go to war to take care of your new friend?" Igor asked raising a brow towards her.
"He is too good for the war," I muttered. "A soul who shouldn't be where he's being sent."
"Are you still sure there's nothing we need to know about?"
She groaned and rolled her eyes at us. I'm sure it was a trait she had picked up from spending a lot of time with teenagers of multiple eras.
"He's just a good person, Dad. A good friend that I do not want to see dying prematurely. He deserves to live how you two should have. A long, mortal, happy life, rotting underground."
"Rosalie would agree with you there," I noted and she shivered.
     "You don't?"
     "Of course, not."
"How can we hate what we are, when if we weren't, we wouldn't have each other. And we wouldn't have you?" Igor added.
"You've spent too much time with Rose, sweetheart," I said and laughed a little.
"Or just watched too many people die. Please, Dad? Please, don't let the war kill him."
He reached his other arm through the fence to her and she ran forward and took it.
"I'll take care of your friend, Verity, you have my word."
     "Thank you, Daddy."
I raised my brows to Igor and was immediately taken aback by his smile. It was the first time she had called him 'Daddy' and it had given him a new spark of life.
Our attention was pulled away by the approach of other soldiers, Igor quickly kissed my hand, eyes urgently boring into mine once more.
"We'll see you there," I whispered to him and wished I could kiss him. "We'll see you there."
His eyes shot to Verity before returning to me. I understood immediately, even while being upwind. He didn't want Verity so close to the warzone, but he knew as well as I did that there was no choice, not with both her father and Johann going. She'd be going, and she'd be armed to protect.

It was easy to find Igor and his team when we reached the warzone, and once we found them Verity and I kept our distance but always close enough to watch.
I knew it was inevitable, but eventually, the Volturi approached Verity and me. It was night but the soldiers weren't sleeping so Igor couldn't join us.
They stayed back, hiding deeper in the shadows than we were, and far enough away that the wind didn't carry their scents to us, but we knew and recognised their scents.
"Hello, Felix. Demetri," Verity said calmly, keeping her eyes on her father.
"Do you want to explain yourselves?" Demetri asked.
"Don't worry. We're keeping an eye on him and will clean up anything that goes wrong," I stated.
     "But nothing will," Verity concluded.
Finally, they jumped for their treetops and approached us. Verity turned so her back wasn't to them. Instinctively, I stood between her and them, Felix's eyes on Igor behind us, Demetri watching us.
     Demetri...

I ran towards my next victim. Lucy had Annie on the ground, coughing up a lung, Julian was my victim, sneaking up on her.

Protecting my Lucy, I killed Julian while Lucy finished Annie.
Our blissful moment of happiness of each others survival was interrupted by her smile disappearing and turning to fear.

I turned to see what made her so afraid. Felix had Igor in a headlock.
     "Igor!" we both yelled.
I no longer cared about Felix. Seeing that sight, I didn't care that it was a man I had once considered my brother. He was killing Igor, a man I was starting to consider my father.
I had to jump over a few people and slide under others. I had an advantage; I knew how the Volturi fought.
I knocked Felix off Igor and tore off his head in the process of throwing his body in the closest pyre.

Lucy helped Igor off the floor as we were once again overrun by Volturi.

I nearly lost my balance at the onslaught of the powerful moment of Demetri's past. The stagger had all three of their attention on me... four. I could feel Igor's eyes on me.
"Mum," Verity stepped closer to me. "Your past or someone else's?"
My eyes weren't on my daughter for long as they immediately moved straight to Demetri. My heart yearning for him to be back where he rightfully belonged, in my family.
"Someone else's," I answered and Demetri's shoulders straightened.
    "This timeline? Or the other?"
"The other." He killed his best friend to save him. "Thank you. You have no idea why, but thank you."
Demetri looked slightly confused and concerned, but he did give a small nod before looking to Felix who was looking just as confused, if not finding the entire encounter slightly funny.
"We should find something to eat," Verity said calmly. "Especially for Dad. Don't worry, they won't hurt him while we're away."
"Are you sure about that?" Felix asked with a taunting grin.
     "Positive."
"We smelt animals up the mountains," Demetri stated and leant back onto his tree.
     "Thank you."
Verity took my hand and began to drag me away. I trusted her word, she must have read something in their futures while I was distracted by Demetri's past.
     "Mrs Farkas?"
I quickly stopped and turned to face Demetri. With his past, remembering how he had loved us, wanted to please us and thought it strange because it was natural and not Corin's work, I wondered if I would always react to him this way now.
     "Yes, Demetri?" I responded.
He looked almost nervous to speak. Which was strange under our current circumstances.
"Demetri, I'm not going to bite," I joked. "You can ask me whatever is bothering you."
Verity chuckled behind me and I squeezed her hand hoping it would tell her to stop.
"The future that you warned us about," Demetri finally spat out, his eyes moved from me to Igor. Paused, then back to me. "That future. It's bad, isn't it?"
     "Very," I answered.
"Do you know... You probably can't answer this, but do I die?"
Felix and Verity laughed at his perfectly normal curiosity. Verity was the first to stop laughing when I glared at her.
"No," I answered and turned back to him. "You and your mate were one of the lucky couples that survived together."
"Mate?" Felix repeated. The word had stopped his laughter. "Demetri had a mate?"
I smiled at Demetri as his expression became too blank, too surprised when he realised I wasn't lying, back to quickly covering blank again.
"Who was the other couple?" Felix asked, probably hoping I'd say him.
     "Carlisle and Esme."
"Who are they?" Demetri asked. "My mate."
     Not alive yet. "Can't say."
     "Not even a name?"
I gave Demetri another smile before turning my back on them, taking my daughter's hand and guiding her to the mountains where they had come across the scents.
