I DIDN'T STAY IN COLUMBUS FOR MUCH LONGER AFTER THAT. Long enough to know that Estelle and Laura had tried to contact Esme, and let her know Charles was dead. Long enough to watch Grace move on with her life, and long enough to know that the vampire secret remained that, a secret.
I did swing past the asylum again, how could I not tell Igor about my brother! Igor encouraged that I attempted to find Carlisle. He said that it would be good for me to finally know my family. I had to agree.
While I was visiting, I managed to convince Igor to install a telephone in the asylum. At first, he had been confused as if I wanted to talk to him, I could just visit.
'What if I have a busy day at work, will have to be back there to save lives in five hours, live on the other side of the country but still want to talk to you? Hear your voice?' I had argued.
'You'll want to hear my voice?' he had responded, raising a brow.
I hadn't answered verbally, but I did shrug. Igor had laughed at me and agreed to install a telephone. It was fun getting to amaze him with human technology. It was even better when he asked about other modern human technologies. I told him about the horseless carriages, the automobile, and how some humans loved going fast so much that they held races to see who was faster.
After I helped Igor install his telephone and we discovered his telephone number, I finally had to leave again. I had been there another month, and my head was starting to become confused again. What did I want?
Then it was 1933, and I was still thinking about it. I was further northeast than usual, just to hunt, and came across a familiar scent.
I chuckled and ran towards Edward, I jumped from tree to tree and sat to watch him hunt once I was close enough.
I chuckled as Edward closed his teeth around the carotid of his victim. 'Well, Edward, I have to stop running into you like this,' I said.
He let the elk drop to his feet and looked up at me.
You didn't last very long on your own, did you? I thought.
'Hello, Elizabeth,' Edward said with a heavy sigh. 'Visiting?'
I jumped down to my nephew and ruffled his hair, it was too neat after being blown back from his run. You're with Carlisle.
'Yes, I found where I belong. Properly.'
Everybody makes mistakes.
'I will never deserve their forgiveness.'
I'm sure you will. They love you.
'Come home with me? Carlisle is working, but you can meet your sister,' Edward suggested.
Of course.
Edward ran ahead, I had to push myself to keep up with him. He was laughing as we approached the house.
'Edward?' a sweet voice said from inside.
'It's okay, Esme,' Edward said soothingly. 'She's... an old friend. Why don't you come out and meet her?'
Esme Cullen ran out of their house to meet us outside. Her eyes widened when she saw me and took in my appearance. She looked at Edward as her scent blew into me. Esme Anne Platt Evenson Cullen, she really was happier and far safer now. And not surprisingly, she didn't remember me from her one brief moment meeting me while she was human.
'That's for her to explain, Esme,' Edward said, still softly. 'But yes.'
Esme stopped breathing. I only made a step towards her to see if I could help in any way. Vampires could go into shock, who knew? But I stopped when Edward flicked his hand towards me, so small Esme may not have even noticed, but it was enough of a 'stop' sign for me.
We waited for her to process what she had just been told.
     Finally, Esme took a breath.
'Carlisle said he was an only child,' she said and looked directly to me.
'That's what he believes. Being a twin in 17th century London, and being of different genders, I was thrown on the street. The creatures of the night kept me alive until I could fight for myself. It's a pleasure to see you again, Esme,' I said.
She doesn't know you killed Charles, I thought eyeing Edward. He straightened his shoulders and invited us all back inside.
'Again?' Esme asked and looked to Edward as if he could clarify.
'We met once in Columbus. Before your escape,' I told her.
'I'm... I'm sorry, I don't remember you,' she said softly.
     I shrugged.
'You'd think I would, with you looking so much like Carlisle,' she added with the tiniest of gorgeous grins.
'She has her own gift, Esme,' Edward said a little too quickly. Interrupting a thought? 'No, nothing like mine. She can tell ones' past by their scent.'
Esme looked at me with her eyes wide, worried now.
'Your secrets are yours to keep,' I told Esme, knowing that my brother still didn't know that she had jumped. He was under the impression that she had merely fallen. 'As are the rest of your families.'
'Why don't you come inside?' Esme offered almost nervously. 'I'm not sure when Carlisle will be home, but I assume it should be soon. He doesn't normally work long on weekends.'
'Where does he work?' I asked.
'Normally at a Hospital,' Esme said with real pride in her voice. Pride and awe.
Edward moved inside and sat down.
'But in this town, he decided to work at the local university as a professor,' Esme continued.
'Medicine runs in the family?' Edward asked from inside.
     'Apparently,' I responded.
Esme moved inside, and I followed her. Edward was sitting in front of a grand piano, his fingers hovering over the keys but not playing anything. It was an expansive room with not much in it other than the piano, a few couches, and a lot of bookshelves. We sat on one of the lounges.
I loved sitting and talking to my sister-in-law and nephew. I told them about my life as since Igor mentioned it, I found it unfair that I knew theirs and they knew nothing about mine. I told them about the streets of London in the 1650s. I told them about how I had a child and tried to give it to the church to look after. My son must have looked too much like me, so of course, my father killed it personally before Carlisle even saw it.
That story made Esme cover her mouth, and her eyes widened. I told them that it was why I gave myself over to the vampires. I wanted to die and fast, and they were the best way for me. They had ignored me until the end of the London Battle when they changed me... and apparently Carlisle as well. I told them about my guilt I felt for not waiting to see if my brother would survive.
Esme just hugged me. Edward began playing a tune I recognised from a long time ago. He must have heard it in my head because as I was able to hum along to the waltz of my time, he played along.
I got a sudden urge to call Igor, let him know that I had met my sister and that she was just as beautiful and kind and lovely as she was while I knew her as a human. I wanted him to talk to her, to meet her, and I hoped they would get along.
     Edward chuckled, pulling Esme's attention.
'Edward?' she said, confused at his laughter.
He shook his head at her.
'You can use our telephone, it's underneath the stairs,' he coached. I nodded and approached their telephone. 'She's not as alone as we thought,' I heard Edward telling his adoptive mother.
Dialling Igor's number seemed more difficult than I thought it would be. Why did I feel nervous calling him from this phone? Why should I be nervous? Why nervous of all emotions? I put in his number anyway and waited. It didn't ring at all because a woman said, 'Hello, I'm greatly sorry, but the number you are trying to reach has been disconnected...' I didn't listen for anything else, I hung up.
Why would Igor disconnect the phone? He had seemed so excited to finally use the foreign object of modern technology, but...
Worry sank deep and settled in my stomach. It rolled until it was a deep knot. Igor wouldn't have disconnected the telephone, he simply wouldn't.
Igor was in trouble. And there I was in New York, states, maybe days away to reach him! If I left now... would I be too late? Would he be okay? Would he still be alive?
The fear and worry were making my muscles tighten.
'Here,' Edward said as he ran to their garage. 'It'll get you there quicker.'
