I KNEW I HAD TO CHECK ON ELIZABETH AGAIN TONIGHT, her stomach was getting big. Surely, she'd be nearing giving birth. But I had to go home to see Elling beforehand. Something was wrong, she had been acting strange for the past week. On edge.
Except when I returned to the house, the door was open and off its hinges.
     "Elling?" I called.
The was a shadow of dread throughout the house. Making me wish I had lit a torch. Something was very wrong.
Walking in, in the foyer counter there was a parchment with writing. Elling's writing:

Carlisle,
I can only apologies for my behaviour these past days. I am being followed, whether it is by my past or by the creatures of the night I cannot be sure, but for your own protection I cannot stay at the Church. I do not know where I will go, perhaps I will travel north. Maybe I shall meet Elizabeth in the new world, I haven't decided yet. But I wish for you to know that I love you like you were my son. Please do not come find me, I will find you once I am safe.
I love you.
Elling.

Were the vampires following her? Why would they?
Began walking into the house, until I walked past the seating area. Where I saw a familiar hand, on the ground, the rest of her body hidden behind the seat.
"No," I gasped and ran to her.
I recognised the look. Vicious but clean. Elling was three shades pale, her eyes and cheeks sunken in. She had been completely drained of everything inside her.
"Elling. I'm sorry. I'm sorry," I said, closing her eyes.
I should have seen it, should have noticed. But I was paying too much attention to Elizabeth, focusing too much in them to notice that someone had gone rogue.
     Or had they?
I stood in time to be face to face with Alfred.
     Blood in his beard.
"Pity she had to die, Carlisle, really," Alfred said and walked around me to Elling. "I just... I couldn't have her here when you got home."
"She was leaving," I said. "She wouldn't have been a concern."
"She didn't leave quick enough. See, things have happened meaning I've had to adjust my schedule."
     Things have happened...
"Elizabeth..." I said and turned to face him. My maker.
"Aye, that little bundle of joy is coming into the world right as we speak." He knelt down and made Elling's dead face look at him then let it drop with gravity.
Realisation began settling in with the fear. He was here. Elizabeth was in a labour that would mean her death. Everyone else was distracted.
He had come to change me.
"Tell me, Carlisle," Alfred said and stood again.
     "Alfred, please..."
"The last time you lived through this, where did I bite you?"
     Dammit.
     "My hand," I answered.
     He winced.
"That must have bene horrible," he said. "How long did it take for you to turn?"
     "Five days."
     "I'm sorry."
I backed into the seat as he began circling.
"Alfred, please. Can this wait?" I asked.
"For what?" Alfred asked, grinning under his beard.
"Let me go to Elizabeth. Help her through this birth and then..."
"You want to be with your sister, during this ever so difficult time. I understand."
A spark of hope. Was I really free to be human a few more hours?
     "Thank you-"
"But Carlisle," Alfred quickly moved in front of the door. "You now see my predicament. For the two of you to be at your strongest with your power, you have to be bit on the same day."
And hope gone. I was not surviving today human.
"Twins," he said and chuckled. "It's all so confusing."
"Okay, you can. Just wait until the baby is born, please," I pleaded.
Stupidly, instinctively, I held my hands to him, as if that would stop him.
He looked at my hands and smiled.
     "Your hand you say?"
Remembering the firey days and the endless, agonising burn, I closed my hands.
He popped his lips and looked at me with an almost apologetic expression. His stare made me feel sick.
"Please, Alfred, after the baby is born I'm all yours."
"But if I let you go to your sisters side, Carlisle, your protectors will all be there. They will stop me. And I will lose my window of opportunity for you both to be at your strongest," Alfred said. "I am sorry, Carlisle, but I cannot let you go."
     "Alfred-"
"If I didn't know any better, Carlisle, I'd say you are afraid," Alfred laughed in his mockery.
"Well, I can easily remember what the five days of my change felt like. I can honestly say I'm not looking forward to it again."
"Well, if it makes you feel any better. I won't bite your hand this time, how does that sound?"
