WHEN IGOR GOT BACK WE DISCUSSED OUR NEXT HOME AFTER MILWAUKEE. He found a shady town in Canada where we'd be able to go outside most of the days.
"Canada," I mumbled. "That's far from Texas. What if Jasper needs me?" I asked.
"I'm sure he's not going to need you for the next few years, Mary," Igor argued. "We'll stay in this new town for your High School years, then we can move again. But, I can promise you, that if you see anything, we'll get you on the first flight to Texas so you can get there as soon as possible. Is that okay?"
I looked between him and Elizabeth, both watching me. Their eyes were cautious... worried. It made me happy to know that they wouldn't act unless I felt Jasper was safe.
"I can always find a town closer," Igor assured me.
"It's okay to say no, Mary," Elizabeth gave me a soft smile. "We're no strangers to vampiric love."
I looked at the picture I was half-finished and really thought about it. Would Jasper be okay if I left that far? I couldn't see of course, because I hadn't made the decision. They were depending on me making the choice.
But would I be okay being so far away from Jasper? For a few years? It was nothing to the long run, but...
Looking at his current future, he'd be fine. He wouldn't need me; I could see that. But there were so many blank spaces, so many decisions unmade.
Anything could change between now and a few years.
I suppose that I had to risk it. Jasper could look after himself. He was a soldier, charismatic, brace. He can look after himself.
"Okay, let's go to Canada," I said softly.
     "Okay," Igor nodded.
Liz pulled me in for a hug, and Igor did his weird one-armed man hug where he then kissed the top of my head. Strange, part, when he did those, I actually felt like I was part of a family.
We started packing straight away. At sunrise, Carlisle and Esme, Edward, and Verity arrived.
Carlisle and Edward left almost immediately after we updated them on the wolves, to discuss their own terms of peace. Edward had refused to let Carlisle go alone, and both of them, and Elizabeth, had refused to let Esme go with them.
"They're human during the day, Esme," Elizabeth had said. "It's too much of a risk."
So Esme stayed and the rest of us waited for Edward and Carlisle's return. When they did they both looked concerned and curious.
"How much longer before the Londoners get here?" Igor asked me though he approached Liz.
"Can't be long now," I answered, looking again. But it was interrupted by visions of Jasper. He kept changing his mind, part of him wanted to come to find me, which was flattering, but the other part wanted to stay and keep an eye on Maria.
I tried to push the visions of Jasper out of the way so I could focus.
"Mary, is everything okay?" Liz asked.
"Jasper keeps changing his mind," Edward chuckled.
"It's okay," I said quickly. "It's nothing dangerous, it just gets in the way. I'm so tuned in to his future even the smallest of change of plan gives me a vision. It's actually a little annoying."
Igor, Liz, and Esme laughed a little.
     "The Londoners?" Carlisle pushed.
"Right," I said with a firm nod and forced myself to ignore Jasper's future for a moment and look for Liz and Carlisle's father and the London coven. "They're almost here," I told them. "Tomorrow, at the latest."
"That gives us time to meet them," Esme said.
Something was odd... they're future... it still disappears. They never make it to the house.
"Mary?" Elizabeth slowly approached me, though her eyes briefly shot over to her daughter.
I looked over to Verity who was watching me, her brows were together, looking at Edward, so were his.
"They're not in our futures still," Verity muttered.
"What does that mean?" Carlisle asked.
"It means their future is still disappearing," I answered. "They still hear the scream, they still stop, they disappear."
"Could you go over it again?" Edward asked.
"You think I missed something?" I challenged.
"No," he smirked. "I just think I heard something I want to hear again."

Okay, I thought and focused to force Jasper out of my head.
Then I swore I heard something too. Something more than just the footsteps and scream.
     "You heard it," Edward said.
