"There was a small period where I wondered the planet. I was in mourning of course, I had no idea if I would ever see you again."

In the outskirts of the academy, Y/N accompanied Fria on a walk, all there was to do was listen to one another, one of many perfect situations the man always wanted.

"Being a Maiden never really felt like a responsibility until your father died, it didn't feel like there was any light in the world. But with him gone, there was hope."

Y/N held a somber expression as she retold her tale without so much as a shift in her brows. The pain was still present, but she learned to dull it and live with it.

"He didn't go in vain, he did it so we could survive... He still would have done it without all--this." She softly gestured to him and herself. "From there, I ran. To wherever I could, sleeping with one eye open, there was even a couple times I had to use his rifle, used just like he showed me."

Fria stopped to stare at the distant mountains through a small patch of scattered students. She sighed almost wistfully.

"Do you... not want to be here?" Y/N asked, seeing as how longingly she gazed at the wilderness.

"Not really." She chuckled. "Not so much now that you're here..."

They shared a smile as her hand softly held his.

"I wanted to show you something." Fria uttered near a whisper. "It didn't seem right at the time."

"What is it?" Y/N asked softly.

Holding his hand in her own, she had his palm face up and reached into her pocket where she pulled out a ring.

"This was your father's." She pinched the piece of metal to show it to Y/N, it was blank and simply made of a dark metal. "Monroe brought it to me after he buried him... he said he died with it."

Y/N's eyes softened, knowing what she was getting to.

"It didn't do anything for me, but I feel it, his aura. There's only one person it could go to."

Me.

"Here." She placed it in his hand and closed his fist. "Get ready."

Y/N nodded as he took a few paced breaths and squared his shoulders.

She looked up to him as he waited, offering any comfort that he may need in the next few seconds.

Y/N's brain was overloaded with information, the sudden shift in the cold air to a hot arid desert was enough for his breathing to hitch and his jaw to lock.

Grunting as his muscles tightened, Y/N harshly exhaled and dropped to his knees while a shaky hand stabilized his balance.

His eyes darted back and forth before he felt grains of dirt in his hand. After a long moment, he stood to see A'liah in the distance.

A small sob caught his attention, just by his side was Solus, Fria and himself. She held him in a soft hug as the baby quietly wailed.

"It's okay." Solus whispered, taking Y/N from Fria and gently rocking him up and down. "It's alright."

The now deceased man shushed the baby as Fria wiped her eyes.

"You're going to have to be strong, okay? You'll be just fine, you'll see... I love you, you hear?"

Handing Y/N back to Fria, he shared a long kiss with his wife, handed her his rifle and reluctantly split ways.

She walked to the middle of nowhere, while he turned back to the town and faced death without a flicker of hesitation in his eyes.
