I'll Wait Here

Not so long ago, I was walking home with a good friend. We both lived in the same apartment building. It was a dark winter night, and the snow was lightly falling down. Suddenly, there was a loud screech and bright yellow lights blinded me. We were tossed off into a ditch.

My friend and I were caked in mud, and we both cursed the driver for being so reckless. With the light of our mobile phones, we helped each other for finding injuries. Miraculously, we survived without a single scratch. We walked for an hour, and when we reached to our apartment building, we stopped for a smoke. After that, I told him I was going to head back. He nodded and replied,

"You go ahead, I'll wait here for a while."

I blinked slowly and found myself in a hospital bed. My body was covered in bandages. I felt my stomach lurched and my head spinning wildly. Dumbfounded, I questioned the nurse beside me, "Where am I? What happen?"

"You're in a hospital," she replied, "you just woke up from a two-day coma. You were hit by a car, and the police found you lying on the road in critical condition. You're incredibly lucky to be alive sir...."

"What about my friend?" I hesitated.

"I'm sorry, he unfortunately didn't make it."

When I got over the shock, I recalled the last words he said to me at the entrance of my home:

"You go ahead, I'll wait here for a while."
