Sister's Death

Inspired by Half-Minute Horrors, "Heart Stopper" originally from Jack Gantos

 I stared blankly at the vast lake upon me. It felt like years ever since my sister died here. Three days ago, she drowned and no one was able to hear her muffled screams.  

"Your father always told me if you jumped into freezing water, your heart will stop instantly." my mother breathed. 

 Her arms wrapped me around like a warm blanket. I shivered when the wind blew hard. My mother was the only support I've had after this tragedy.  

"I wished I reacted faster... by the cabin of ours I heard a howl. I thought it was the trees whistling a tune..." she covered her face before the tears fell.

I looked behind her to see if I could comfort my mother. Slowly, her sniffled cries turned to soft giggles.

"Mother -" 

With eyes wide open, I plunged into the water as crackled laughter filled the air.
