The Catalina Island mountain-mahogany (Cercocarpus traskiae) is thought to be one of the rarest shrubs in the continental United States. It grows naturally only in one gully system on the south side of Santa Catalina Island, part of the Channel Islands. This rare and much sought-after wand wood has often proven a headache for both wandmakers and consumers. A picky and judgmental wand, Mountain Mahogany can be incredibly tricky to master. It is happiest when in the hands of a master who exhibits great humility and philanthropy and can produce some of the most powerful protection charms.
