Pinus ponderosa, commonly known as the ponderosa pine, bull pine, blackjack pine, or western yellow pine, is a very large pine tree species of variable habitat native to the western United States and Canada. It is the most widely distributed pine species in North America. It is the state tree of Montana.

A surprisingly tough wood to work, Ponderosa Pine is just as strong and passionate a wood as its rich color might suggest. A cousin of red pine, the two share similar properties as wand woods, being often found in the hands of warriors, and those not easily swayed from their beliefs. Ponderosa wands have the interesting quirk of responding strongly to its wizard's emotions, casting more powerfully when the wizard is impassioned – be it by love, fury, or both – making it a wand wood fairly common in Aurors from the West coast of the United States.
