Pinus balfouriana, the foxtail pine, is a rare high-elevation pine that is endemic to California, United States. It is closely related to the Great Basin and Rocky Mountain bristlecone pines, in the subsection Balfourianae. The two disjunct populations are found in the southern Klamath Mountains and the southern Sierra Nevada. A small outlying population was reported in southern Oregon but was proven to have been misidentified.

Deep purple and lightly grained, foxtail pine has proven to be a fascinatingly clever wood. Foxtail pine, like its favored master, is mischievous, playful, and devilishly fun, and has been known to have a very independent disposition, occasionally acting on its own. Foxtail is particularly prudent in the art of illusions and was the wand of infamous early 20th-century gangster Bartholomew "Coyote" Woodson, known for creating illusions of entire streets, blocks, and alleys to confuse pursuing authorities. Often these illusions were so powerful, that they would last for days or even weeks after their casting. This wand was eventually inherited by Melissa Evercreetch, the older twin sister of James Evercreetch, and the last living descendants of Ilvermorny founder Isolt Sayre. They would also become the first pair of wizards since Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort to own wands with the same core. It's slightly longer and more powerful than its brother, which is made from Sequoia. This wood is especially powerful when paired with a Thunderbird tail feather, Quetzacoatl feather, or Sasquatch hair.
