The tree species Sorbus americana is commonly known as the American mountain-ash. It is a deciduous perennial tree, native to eastern North America. The American mountain-ash and related species are also referred to as rowan trees.

American Mountain-Ash is probably the most powerful member of the Rowan family, not to be confused with actual ash. Heavily prized in eastern North America, American Mountain-Ash is both protective and creative and desires an owner that can inspire it to reach new heights. Its owners are alert and curious people who use logic primarily to make decisions. Even in a stressful situation, they can think clearly and efficiently.

These witches are honest and sincere. They often have many friends and admirers. They are quick-witted and always have something to say. They love lively discussions and debates. In their youth, they may have run their mouth. Hopefully with maturity, they become better at keeping some of their comments to themselves. It's not that they mean to do anything malicious but that they like to overshare how clever they are.

They're creative people, who enjoy writing, drawing, acting, sculpting, and anything that involves utilizing their imaginations. If they lack talent (though still enjoy the activity), then they may be a great patron of the arts. Puzzles and riddles delight them. Cryptology and sudoku may be among their hobbies. There is a higher rate of ambidexterity among rowan wand owners than other witches and wizards Fairies are attracted to rowan wands and their owners. Fortunately, the owners are well-liked by them; fairies may even bring them small gifts.

There is talent at magic to do with astral projection, voice, dreams, and protection through redirection. It protects well against fire and lightning-based magics. There may be talent in divining precious metals. Depending on the core, there may be great healing talent. It does not perform non-verbal magic well but does indicate that its owner may perform wandless magic better than most other witches and wizards. Their owners are less inclined to succumb to enchantments than other witches and wizards. This may be attributed to the protective properties of rowan. American Mountain-Ash is great for divination, ancient runes, defense against the dark arts, charms, arithmancy, and potions. There may be issues with transfiguration. This is one of the best wand woods for defense against the dark arts and for defending against inferi (and other products of necromancy). Tying a red thread around the wand can increase its defensive capabilities.

Swirls of cherry red are emitted by this wand during spellwork, followed by a strong and sweet musk. This wand will whistle to help its owner locate it, signal danger, or to send messages. It is at its strongest between the winter solstice and spring equinox. American Mountain-Ash pairs most naturally with dragon heartstring and other reptilian-based cores. American Mountain-Ash will refuse to bond with iron as an embellishment or as a handle.
