Ebony is a dense black/brown hardwood, most commonly yielded by several different species in the genus Diospyros, which also contains the persimmons. Ebony is dense enough to sink in water. It is finely-textured and has a very smooth finish when polished, making it valuable as an ornamental wood. The word ebony comes from the Ancient Egyptian hbny, through the Ancient Greek ἔβενος, into Latin and Middle English.

This jet-black wand wood has an impressive appearance and reputation, being highly suited to all manner of combative magic, and to Transfiguration. Ebony is happiest in the hand of those with the courage to be themselves. Frequently non-conformist, highly individual or comfortable with the status of outsider, ebony wand owners have been found both among the ranks of the Order of the Phoenix and among the Death Eaters. In my experience the ebony wand's perfect match is one who will hold fast to his or her beliefs, no matter what the external pressure, and will not be swayed lightly from their purpose.

A powerful wand wood, ebony wands seek owners of strong will power, a methodical mind, and personal magnetism. To say the least, these witches and wizards are staunch individuals who abide by their personal moral and ethical code more than by society's. If they just so happen to match up, then they often hold positions of power within government or education. They possess a hard working attitude since youth, and may have been described as being overly serious or pessimistic. Slackers are among their top pet peeves. With their great will power, they accomplish most tasks they set out to achieve. However, sometimes this is regardless of the means to said accomplishments. They will also challenge the ways others have achieved their goals, and so may be (rightly) accused of hypocrisy. Another way of seeing it–the ebony wand owner does not question their own methods, as they perceive them as moral according to their personal ethical system. But they do not trust other people's morals or integrity, which thus makes them question the decisions and means of success of others.

They like to follow or create step-by-step instructions and do not enjoy having to improvise on the fly. They can be adaptable, if given enough time, but are irritable when forced to make last minute changes. They put a lot of thought into decisions, and dislike them being changed because of 1) other people not considering their own decisions thoroughly enough or 2) that they didn't have a contingency plan for said interruption. Due to the above factors, these people make for natural leaders. They cannot stand following the orders of others, especially those they perceive as lazy or incompetent. There is often musical talent, or talent with art to do with intricate details. An interest in spiritual knowledge is common, and they may have a deep appreciation for tales to do with the supernatural. Their eyes are intense and usually one of their best features.
