You smiled at the video on the screen, wishing you were there. You hadn't seen your sister since before the five year mission started.
Apparently she had a baby, and didn't tell you until this morning. She had a baby boy, named Christopher, nine months after you left.
He's two years old now. You sighed, and watched the video again. Sure, you loved your job, but you missed your family.
You looked up as your boyfriend walked in. "Hey, what's up?" He asked, seeing your sullen face.
"Oh you know, I just found out I missed the birth of my nephew." You replied sadly, setting the PADD down on the table.
"Oh your sister had a kid?"
"Yeah, two years ago, and she never bothered to tell me." You said, and looked at him. "I miss my family. No one ever talks to me anymore, I hate it."
"Hey, it's alright. They're just jealous." He said smiling.
"Of what?"
"The fact you're living your dream, and they're not. It's not everyday a pretty girl like you gets to get the job of a lifetime. Or boyfriend."
You smiled at his attempts to cheer you up. "You're full of your self."
"And yet you love me anyway." He said, kissing your cheek.
You kissed his cheek back, and stood up. "At least you're right about one thing." You said, then walked out to start your next shift. At least you had Jim. If it wasn't for him, you'd be a whole lot more lonely.
Yes, at least he was there for you.
