3rd Pov.
After jumping off the balcony, Y/n uses his fire from his feet to send him flying like a rocket. With Clem on his back, he had to be careful, but he knew she'd be fine. Most people in Clem's position would be pissing their pants, but she has faith in him that he won't drop her. As he uses fire for a boost, he makes it over to one of the other apartment buildings across the way. Below there's a lot of walkers.
Y/n: Alright, I think this is fine here.
Clem hops off of his back and the two look over the edge. All the walkers below aren't able to get inside the building. Luckily somebody must've managed to barricade the door before they could break it down. The two look into the crowd of the dead and aren't seeing any little kid walkers, a short adult one but no kids.
Clementine: I think that's a good sign, don't you?
Y/n: Good? Yes. But unfortunately it doesn't exactly tell us she's going to be in the building, just that she's not dead. Or at least I don't believe she could be.
He starts to look around the roof and comes to find one of those doors that lead into the building by the opposite side of the roof. Clem follows him and he tries to open it, but it's stuck...great. This means he's going to have to bust down the door. Clem looks at the door, coming to the conclusion it's locked.
Clementine: Be careful. Try not to bring down the building.
Y/n: Well, I'm trying to bring the kid back alive. Not in pieces. And believe it or not, I can actually think smart. Watch and learn from the master, my lovely future wife.
He takes off the baseball bat from his back and lights it on fire. Going toward the side somewhat so the bat can be more level with the knob, he pulls his arm up and swings down. With some little amount of force, a good amount of fire, and a touch of technique, Y/n is able to tear off the door handle. As it falls off, the door opens up only for them to find an empty stairwell that leads them into the building further.
Clementine: I think we should've asked which floor they were on.
Y/n: Yeah, well, coulda... shoulda... woulda.
Clementine: I'm not sure if there are walkers in here, maybe people who made it inside after being bitten. We've gotta stay on our guard just in case my feeling is correct.
Y/n: No sweat. We'll be in and out before you know it.
The duo walk down the stairs and land on the highest floor where there are a bunch of doors. Some are opened fully, others are creaked, but only one at the end of the hall is actually shut. However, that's not the only thing they notice as they hear crying coming from inside the place and outside the door are a couple walkers. Some have bite marks on their necks or visible ones on their arms.
Clementine: Shit, looked like I was right. I was hoping I wasn't.
Y/n: Well, let's make this quick. Even if it isn't Ida, we can't just leave some kid to be killed by these things.
Clementine: True. Let's get their attention.
Y/n pulls off his guitar and strums a few notes, like a similar twinkie loving florida man, getting the attention of the walkers at the end of the hall. And of course two just had to be sprinters. A single one turns it's head before the others follow suit and two come sprinting towards them as the rest slowly walk. Due to the tight space and short distance, both a big blast of flame is out of the question and a flame bullet might not be accurate enough. He's going to have to do this like the old days.
The two walkers sprint towards the kids, with one being slightly slower than the others, and one jumps on top of Y/n, but he holds it back using his bat. It tries to bite at him, but Clem shoots it in the head and Y/n shoves it off of himself. While Clem is distracted, she doesn't realize the other is almost on top of them but luckily Y/n has her back and swings his bat while he's still on the floor, taking out the walker's knee. As it's head strikes the ground, he shoots it in the head with a flame bullet and Clem helps him up.
Clementine: Shit, that was a little closer than expected. These tight hallways are a bitch.
Y/n: No kidding.
The rest of the walkers, still shambling, try to get closer to them but Y/n just takes out the slower ones with a quick volley of flame bullets to the head. After each one falls down dead, they both go to the door where soft crying can be heard. Not quite knowing what to say, Y/n just knocks on it.
Y/n: Hey, uh, Ida. I can hear you crying in there, but you don't have to worry, we took care of the dead.
No reply, she just keeps crying.
Y/n: Listen, I get that you're probably scared right now but we're not here to hurt you. We've been sent by your mother to come get you. If you unlock the door, we'll take you to her. No worries.
The girl stops crying, but the door is still locked and she isn't opening it. However, she slides a picture underneath the door and Y/n looks at it only to find that it's the same one he took with her mother. It's followed by the sound of a little girl's voice, one that couldn't be older than five. He can still hear her on the other side of the door.
Ida: Is... Is that you? Mama said she met you and brought me this picture.
He picks up the picture and burns the edge of it, just a little to show that it was him. Sliding it back under the door, it soon opens and a little girl with short straight brown hair and brown eyes. She looks almost exactly like Fern, but as a four foot tall kid and minus the broken limbs. Her eyes are red from crying, but as soon as she saw Y/n she just stared at him. A part of her was unsure if it was truly him, so Y/n holds out his finger and it turns into fire before he quickly turns it back to normal.
Y/n: (Smiles) Hello, Ida. My name is Y/n and this is my girlfriend, Clementine.
Clementine: We're here to help, sweetie.
Ida immediately leans forward and hugs Y/n, who's essentially like her favorite "fairy tale" come to life, so he hugs her back to make her feel better. After a minute, they let go and Y/n places his hand on her shoulder.
Y/n: No, in order to get out of here we're going to have to go up to the roof. Are you ready?
Ida nods.
Ida: Yes.
Y/n: Then let's hit the road. I'm sure your mom is worried sick about you.
While walking back up to the roof, Ida starts to ask all sorts of questions to Y/n and he answers them. How old he is, where he's from, how he got his power, etc. and so on. Clem watches the interaction, how good he is with kids, and it reminds her of AJ. Even if she never said it, Clem... ...she believed he was a good dad to AJ. And watching this just proves her point. He does not always show this side of him, but when he does she really enjoys watching him interact with people.
Soon, they all make it to the roof and Y/n stands on the ledge where Clem follows him. He tells Ida what they're going to do and she looks over, but gets scared by the height; she backs away. Y/n goes over to her and kneels down, placing his hand on her shoulder like he'd done before to talk with her.
Y/n: I know you must be scared, but I won't let anything happen to you. I give you my word.
Ida looks at him and he can still see that she's scared, so he takes off his hat and puts it on her head. Clementine is surprised by this as his hat and his guitar are two of his most prized items. They mean a lot to him. Ida looks at the hat.
Y/n: This hat was given to me by my mother and whenever I wear it, I feel strong. It makes me brave and by extension it gives my flames the power they have. So when you wear it, it'll make you brave and strong as well. How do you feel?
Ida: I... I feel stronger.
Y/n: And brave?
Ida: (Nods) Yes.
Y/n: Now, do you think you can help me out on this and hold onto my hat while I get you back to your mom?
Ida: Yes!
Y/n: That's what I like to hear. Come on.
He picks her and Clementine up, both in a different arm, and Ida holds onto his hat. Making sure he has a good hold on them so neither fall, he jumps off the ledge and uses his flames to fly back toward the apartment. Some time passes and after a minute they make it back to the apartment where Y/n lands on the outside metal balcony. Everyone was inside waiting & he sets down Clem and Ida.
Going over to the window, Clementine climbs through first and the others spot her, including Fern. They wonder where Y/n is but he climbs through next; at first she doesn't see her kid & starts to feel dread, but Y/n leans out of the window and picks up Ida, having to crawl in first so he'd be able to get her inside the room better. He pulls her through the window and everyone is both happy and amazed to find that she was alive, wearing his hat. None more so than Fern.
Fern: Oh, my god!
Ida: Mama!
Fern can't get up due to her injury and her arm is no in a splint, but still she holds her arms out for her daughter who runs to give her a hug. Kate looks at them and can't help but feel relieved Ida was still alive. Y/n walks over with Clementine and Tripp pats him on the back, impressed by him.
Tripp: Shit, kid, looks like you keep doing the impossible.
Y/n: Hey, don't give me all the credit. Without Clementine things could've gone a lot less smooth out there. Even little Ida over there was calm and helpful throughout the whole thing. She was a truly brave kid.
Ida looks back at him and walks over to him.
Ida: You mean it?
Y/n: Of course, I do.
The little girl smiles at him and takes his hat off of her head. She holds it up.
Ida: Here's your hat. Thank you, it helped me be brave.
Y/n just smiles and puts his hat back on. Fern looks at Y/n with tears in her eyes, wiping them.
Fern: I was... preparing for the worse. But you brought her back to me. You really do live up to your legend.
He shakes his head.
Y/n: Nah, I'm just a guy who can't stand seeing family separated. And like I said, Clementine deserves some of the credit too.
She just rolls her eyes.
Clementine: (Grins) That's all you, big guy.
With a family now reunited, Fern actually pulls out a small camera from the inside of her jacket and Ida asks for a picture. He nods and Clem goes to step out of the shot, but Ida grabs her with her little hand.
Ida: C'mon, I want you in it too.
Clementine gives her a smile and the three take a picture with Ida wearing his hat once again. After the picture is done, Y/n takes his hat back and he grabs the picture where he writes on the back of it with a pen he found on the nearby shelf. On the back it reads, "Y/n, Clementine, and Ida, the three amigos. 13, 13, 5." He hands it back to Ida and as for the Fern side of the story, a broken arm is nothing compared to how things could've gone. She felt blessed her child was safe and that's all she could've asked for from god. All she could've wished for in her moment of need.
