3rd Pov.
After driving away from the walker infested garage, the group parks in the middle of a street. But it's mostly abandoned so there's not real problem being out in the open. Clementine is laying up against Y/n and Gabe is sitting across from them.
Javier: The square is a couple of blocks away. This is a good place to wait.
Kate: Do we have enough gas?
Javier: I'm not about to turn the engine off again.
Kate: What now?
Javier: We wait for Ava to call us on the walkie.
Kate: So... nothing for us to do but sit and watch the sun come up.
Y/n leans back and takes off his hat. He looks inside of it and there he finds the old pictures that he'd kept over the years. One is of Lee, the one he found inside the drug store all those years ago and by it was also the picture they took during the time with the other group two years ago. It's a picture of Y/n dipping Clementine like Gomez would Morticia Addams.
Y/n: Remember this?
Clementine: (Giggles) Yes. I definitely do. I can't believe you've kept that photo for so long.
Y/n: Well, It's been in my hat so I've just been lucky enough to keep it around. Same with the photo of Lee. They're my keepsakes.
Turning over the photo of them, Y/n sees the inscription on the back. It was something he'd written after it was taken.
Y/n: "You started a flame in my heart." Man, I was cringey back then.
She looks at him and gives him a small kiss on the cheek.
Clementine: Ah, well, I like it. It's cute.
He shakes his head.
Y/n: Man, it doesn't take much to make you think something's cute, hm?
Clementine: Oh, hush.
Y/n: I want to find a camera again.
She looks at Y/n.
Clementine: Really?
Y/n: (Nods) Yeah. I mean I'd like to take a family photo with AJ and Molly whenever we find them again. We can show our future kids when we're, like, in our late twenties or something. It'd be an interesting thing.
Clementine chuckles.
Clementine: Well next time we find one, we'll take that picture.
The two continue to talk to one another as Javier and Kate look back at them.
Kate: It's nice to be driving around with a couple kids in the backseat again. Really takes you back, doesn't it? Just you, and me, and Gabe and...Mari. Better times.
Javier: Ah, yes, the days of scrubbing upchuck out of the upholstery. I don't miss that.
Kate: I never realized just how much kids could vomit until I was trapped in a car with them 24/7. Or how far...
They look back at the kids again and look at specifically Y/n and Clem, seeing how close the two are and how they act towards one another.
Javier: Kind of amazing, isn't it? That in the middle of all this, they find the time to flirt with each other.
Kate: Guess it just goes to show. You stick two people together, something's going to happen between them. I'm just glad it's the good something.
Javier: Well, those two have known each other for forever. Makes sense. It's crazy how two kids can have a better relationship than most adults.
Kate: It's so normal, you know? Like, as crazy as things get, as terrible and tragic and just plain stupid. There's nothing more wonderfully ordinary as two kids falling for each other. To feel something that intensely for another person? Kinda like the best drug there is. Well, one of the best drugs.
Javier: When I was his age and I liked a girl, I was a fucking wreck. Sweaty palms, and stomachaches, and--
Kate: Boners, behind math books? We knew. Every time, we knew.
Javier: See? Hell on earth. But I guess it helps when you're as smooth as Y/n. I mean, shit, that kid is admittedly pretty cool. Though, it's easy to tell Clem loves him for more than just that.
Kate looks down.
Kate: It's unfair. That's all I'm saying. That they're feeling what they're feeling right now, and... When that sun gets a little higher, it's right back to the fight. I wish Gabe could have had a childhood, you know? I wish I could have given him that. Him and Mari both. They deserved better than this. Better than what got handed to them.
Javier puts his hand on her shoulder.
Javier: You did the best you could, Kate. You kept this family alive, as long as you possibly could. That counts for a lot.
Kate looks at him.
Kate: I hope you know, Javi... Having you there with me, right by my side, all this time... That's what made the difference. You're so sure of...what you're doing all this for. You didn't run away. You could have. But you didn't.
Javier nods.
Javier: I'm here so I can set an example for people... For Gabe, especially. Someone to be proud of. Someone who sticks around.
Kate: I get it. There is no graceful way to say this, so I'm just gonna say it: I know we've had moments, you and I. And they're always a little hot, and a little confusing, and maybe some of them haven't meant anything at all, but...
She takes a breath in and then breathes out.
Kate: ...before whatever happens tomorrow happens, I need you to know. Whatever this thing is between us, I want to give it a chance. And I know the fact that David is back in our lives now makes this whole thing a little more complicated, but do you feel the same way? I'd really like to know. Before things get crazy. We might not get another chance! No pressure or anything, right? Maybe I should have stayed quiet.
Javier thinks about it for a moment and Y/n looks over at them, having heard the conversation. Gabe was napping through it all or at least zoned out, so he wasn't really paying attention, but Y/n...was.
Y/n: Hey, Javier, Kate.
They both look at him. He gives a thumbs up.
Y/n: Life is too short these days to be worrying about anybody else. You two should give it a shot.
Kate blushes and Javier shakes his head.
Javier: Ah, what the hell? He's right. Let's go for it! We gotta try, right?
Kate: Oh, my God! Really?
Javier: Really.
Kate: So are we gonna...
Javier kisses Kate.
Kate: Okay. Yeah! Shit, we're doing this! You do realize we're gonna have to have a weird conversation with David, right? It's the right way to play this. He already got the sense I was pulling away. I just wanna be able to tell him, in person. It'll feel better that way.
Javier: That would be the stand-up thing to do in this situation. Can I just say how lame doing the stand-up thing is, though?
Kate: (Nods) Oh, it's super lame.
Suddenly, the radio goes off and it's Ava on the other side.
Ava: (Radio) Javi, it's an execution over here! She's planning to hang David in front of the whole crowd! You gotta get over here now! Don't bring the truck! If they see it, they'll kill him right away! If you can just get into the square-
Javier: Shit, we gotta get over there. Now!
Javi, Clem, Y/n, and Gabe, after waking up, get out of the truck.
Kate: I'm going to hang back here, with the truck.
Javier: Keep the walkie close by. We'll tell you as soon as we've got David.
Javier kisses Kate.
Kate: Good luck.
The group start to leave and Gabe asks about Ava as the radio suddenly cutting off was not a great sign.
Gabe: Nothing else from Ava?
Javier: Nope. And it sounds like a crowd out there.
Clementine: It sounded like Ava got cut off by something.
Y/n: Or somebody.
Clementine: Wish we had some idea of what we're heading into. Like, is the whole plan shot? Or did she just have a little setback? I hate not knowing
Y/n shrugs.
Y/n: Tripp and Eleanor might have had second thoughts about this whole thing. It's not their fight.
Clementine: Maybe.
Javier looks at them.
Javier: They wouldn't bail on us, guys. Have faith in them.
Y/n: Javier, I have faith in four things. Jesus, Clementine, Molly, and myself. Tripp and Eleanor aren't even top twenty. Maybe twenty five.
Gabe looks at them.
Gabe: No way! They wouldn't have done that to us.
Clementine: You never know with some people.
Y/n: You're right about that. Some people just aren't cut from the same cloth as others. It's how it is. Let that be a lesson from me to you, Gabe.
Gabe: We're not gonna know what went wrong until we actually do this thing. So let's do it, already.
Javier looks at his nephew.
Javier: You ready?
Gabe: Ready as I'm gonna be.
Javier: Glad to hear it.
Soon, the group travels through the place and makes it to the town square. Joan and David are on the platform in the square; David stands on a stool with a noose around his neck. A crowd is gathered around the stage. David looks pissed and Joan is talking, making up some bullshit that anybody with true information could see through.
Joan: I don't know about the rest of you, but I didn't want to be here today. The people of Richmond deserve to be safe! David García has to be punished for what he's done!
Javier: Shit...
Gabe: We can't wait for the others, can we?
Y/n: Not looking like it.
They watch her speak and something... Something is more off than usual.
Joan: For years now, Richmond has been governed by one simple principle: Strong council, strong community. But unfortunately, the actions of one of the members of that council, our security expert, David García, have put us all in danger.
David, still tied up by the noose and bands around his arms, shouts.
David: She's lying to all of you!
Joan: I'm sorry to have to show you this. Truly, I am, but you all need to see! Just look what he's done!
A Frontier soldier removes a sheet to reveal the corpses of Badger, Lonnie, and Lingard. Lingard having a hole in his head as well as slight burn marks around the hole due to the flame bullet. It wasn't too easy to see from the distance, but close enough you could see it.
Joan: David ordered his brother, and the rest of his people, to kill our doctor! And they were happy to do it! Is this who we want in charge? Someone this reckless?! This cruel? Not if I have anything to do with it!
Gabe looks at Javier.
Gabe: Can't believe this is really happening. She's gonna kill him! She can't do this to him. He's kept them safe!
Javier: Try to keep your cool. Joan's smart, but we're smarter. We just have to be careful.
Gabe: We can't screw this up, Javi.
Suddenly, Joan calls out to them.
Joan: Javier! I'd heard you were planning to crash our little party. Why don't you come on up here? Show your face to everyone. I'm sure these people would like to hear what you have to say. Don't make me ask twice!
Y/n: (Sighs) Shit.
Javier looks up at her.
Javier: Happy to! Been waiting for this all day...
Joan: Then I'll try not to disappoint you!
Javi walks out in front of the crowd and faces Joan. Clementine, Y/n, and Gabe stay back.
Javier: Doctor Lingard had a problem. He couldn't stay out of his own supply. He asked me to put him out of his misery. I was only doing what he wanted.
Joan: Sorry if I don't take your word for it. Too bad you killed the only man who could back up your story... I had a very interesting conversation with your friend Eleanor last night.
Upon hearing this, Javier and the others in the group seemed surprised.
Joan: She was the one who alerted us to David's plot against Lingard. Isn't that right, Eleanor?
Eleanor: That's... That's right.
Y/n looks at her.
Y/n: (Mind) I fucking knew it.
Joan: She said you came here because you wanted to save your brother. Admirable... almost. Don't know how you thought you were going to pull it off. Considering it's all of us against the four of you. But I guess hope springs eternal.
Joan spots Y/n in the crowd.
Joan: Well, I see one way you were hoping to pull it off.
Y/n raises up both hands and flips her off.
Javier: And that's exactly what I'm planning to do.
Joan: Appreciate the honesty. Which makes this so much harder... Here in Richmond, people who put themselves before the group don't last long. Bring them out!
Frontier soldiers bring out Tripp and Ava much to Eleanor's surprise and the others.
Tripp: Get away from me!
Ava: You're making a mistake!
David: Ava!
Clementine: Oh, no...
Y/n: Things just got even more complicated.
Gabe looks at them.
Gabe: They had them this whole time!
Joan: David wanted to tear this whole place down. He told his people where to find our gun supply, and sure enough, they picked us clean. You really thought you could ride into town and stage a coup? With our own damn weapons? Something like that I can't just let it go. You've put me in a no-win situation here! So I'm gonna do the same thing to you. Both of them deserve to die for their crimes. However, Javi, I'll let you spare on of them. Just one.
Ava: No!
Tripp: Hell no!
David: Joan, don't!
Joan: Not after what they tried to do. You may be guilty of bringing them into this, but they chose to go along with it.
Javier looks at Joan and, trying to save his friends, he asks for her to take them. At the same time, Y/n is looking around to see if there are any guards by them. And there are. He whispers something to Clem and Gabe; a plan of sorts.
Javier: If you're gonna punish anyone, it should be me, not them.
Joan: So ready to sacrifice yourself for others. Don't worry, Javi. I'm not through with you yet.
