Chapter 33: A Part of The Group?

Y/N Pov.

Lee and the two strangers look at Clementine and I as we stand behind him holding hands. Carley's at the top with us too, and for some reason the guy seems pretty excited to see us.

Lee: What are you three doing up here?

I look at him and shrug.

Y/n: Clem wanted to come up, so we came with her.

He looks at Carley, but I notice she shrugs, too.

Carley: What can I say? They were really convincing.

Suddenly, I hear the new guy speak up again with a lot of excitement in his voice while the lady stands beside him quietly.

Guy: Do you know how long it's been since I've seen kids? Shit! What are your names?

Clementine: (Smiles) Clementine.

Y/n: I'm Y/n.

Lee looks at us and smiles.

Lee: Oh, so he gets to swear?

Y/n: Well he's a stranger for now, so we can't exactly stop him.

Carley walks up beside Lee and she looks at the new woman along with the short guy.

Carley: Nice to meet you, I'm Carley. And you are?

The woman looks at her, but from what I can see, she doesn't look annoyed.

Woman: Christa.

Guy: I'm Omid.

Y/n: (Mind) Omid and Christa? Weird name combination.

I look off the side of the overpass while Christa and Carley speak to each other. Looking out over everything is kind of peaceful. I like how far I can see; even if the old world is gone, doesn't mean this new one can't be pretty.

Omid: Well, this is great. See, things are looking up.

I turn back to the others and I see Christa focus her eyes on Lee.

Christa: You're not their parents. They down there?

Lee: It's that obvious?

Carley: To me.

Lee: And, no, they're not down there.

I look at Christa.

Y/n: My mom and Dad went with Clem's on a trip before, well, y'know. We haven't seen them since the whole "apocalypse" thing started, but we're going to Savannah to find them. That's our plan at least.

Omid: Whoa, sorry to hear about that little dude.

Christa: Must've been hard.

Y/n: Yeah, well, we've had Lee and Carley to look after us.

Christa looks at the two.

Christa: Hmm. What's your story?

Lee smiles and kneels down beside us.

Lee: I came across the kids alone the first day all of this happened. I was actually incarcerated.

He stands back up.

Omid: Sick, do you have any prison tats?

Lee: I didn't make it that far.

Christa looks at Carley.

Christa: And you?

Carley: I was a news reporter for WABE in Atlanta. I came down to Macon to film the Cherry Blossom Festival, and eventually met Lee and the kids in his parent's pharmacy with others. That feels like a long time ago now.

Omid: I know how you feel.

Christa: And everybody down there, they're cool?

I look off the overpass again, looking down at Chuck, Kenny, and Ben.

Y/n: We just met Chuck, but he's cool.

Christa: You've always got to worry about meeting new people.

I laugh a little and look at her, thinking back to the dairy.

Y/n: Dude, you've got no idea.

Lee walks over to me and nods to Kenny who's down by the train still.

Lee: Kenny lost his wife and kid.

I see Omid's face change just slightly.

Omid: Man. How long ago?

Carley: What time is it?

Omid: I don't know. Uh, four?

Lee: Maybe two hours ago.

Christa: Goddamn.

Y/n: Yeah, hasn't been easy.

I jump up on the ledge of the overpass, sitting down on it while I keep my baseball bat in my hand. My guitar hanging from my back. Omid looks at us with Christa, seemingly a little sad.

Omid: We're sorry for anything that's happened to you guys. That train is awesome, though.

Christa: That tank is your real problem. We'll help you with it, but if we see anything we don't like, we're moving on down the road. Alone.

Lee: We'd appreciate the help.

Omid: You can't just blast through it, I guess.

Christa: If you could get it down, the rest would probably be pretty easy.

Lee: We'll start there.

Christa: We'll come down and settle in and see if we can help.

Carley: Alright, but before we go down there we should look around up here before we leave. Could be some useful stuff up here. Wouldn't be a good to miss it.

As Lee and Carley start to look around up top, in the truck behind us, I hop off the ledge and get next to Clementine. We look off the overpass together as we wait for the others to be done with the search. She looks at me with a smile.

Clementine: What do you think about Christa and Omid?

Y/n: I think they're cool, so far. Omid always sounds excited, but Christa seems quiet.

Clementine: Yeah, she sounds serious.

I laugh.

Y/n: They kind of remind me of us.

Clem smiles.

Clementine: How?

Y/n: Well, I'm the funny one. And you're more serious.

Clementine: Pfft. Nuh, uh. I'm the funny one.

I shake my head.

Y/n: Nope, sorry, it's definitely me.

Clementine: (Smirks) Well...I bet I'm faster than you.

Y/n: Tag, you're it. Try and catch me!

She starts to chase me around the overpass, but I run around Carley to avoid her. Running in a circle, until I trip over a piece of the ground and fall. Before I can get up, Clementine walks over and touches my back.

Clementine: Got you.

I stand up and look at her.

Y/n: You got lucky.

Clementine: Still counts.

She giggles and as annoyed as I was for the second, I can't stay mad at her. I sigh, and cross my arms.

Y/n: Fine. You win.

Clementine: See, I'm awesome.

Y/n: Well I always thought that, Clem. Now you're also the tag champion.

From behind us, we hear Carley call to us.

Carley: Come on, guys. We're heading down.

Y/n: Okay.

Clementine: We're coming.

Soon, everyone of us goes down the ladder to join the rest of the group. Kenny, Ben, and Chuck are standing together while Lee introduces Christa and Omid to them. But it's a little awkward.

Lee: Guys, this is Omid and Christa.

None of them say anything and I whisper to Clementine.

Y/n: Tough crowd.

Omid: Not big on welcomes...

Lee: Like I said, it's been a bit of a day.

Omid looks at the others in our group.

Omid: We just wanted to say hi and say that your train is pretty cool.

Christa: But we're not looking for charity.

Omid: We could help you guys, though.

Christa: Maybe.

The more we hear them talk, the more I start to cringe a little. I mean, I know it's not their fault, but the silence isn't great.

Y/n: (Mind) At least it hasn't ruined anything yet.

Omid: So, yeah...hi, uh, again.

Chuck walks up to them and offers some candy to them.

Chuck: Y'all want some candy?

Neither of them say anything before Lee tells the others about our plan to cut down the tanker.

Lee: The plan is to cut that tanker down and be on our way.

Kenny: Seems like plan enough to me.

Omid looks back to Christa.

Omid: You want to start in on that tanker?

She looks at us though.

Christa: I'll get to know the kids for a minute, if you don't mind.

Kenny: And why don't I show you how this thing works, in case something happens?

I look at Kenny.

Y/n: Are you sure, Kenny?

Kenny: It's probably for the best. Someone might want to have a look inside of that station back there, too.

Omid: Sounds great. Let's do this thing.

Kenny and Omid enter the cab. Christa, Clementine, and I sit on the ground, talking. Chuck sits on a rock near us, playing guitar, while Ben sits on top of the train. Though I watch as Lee goes into the train cabin, probably talking to Kenny and Omid now. Carley's also inside the train with him.

Christa: So, what has life been like for you kids ever since, well, the world ended? What have you seen?

Y/n: Well we've seen a lot.

Clementine: Yeah.

Christa: I imagine it must've been hard, not being with your parents I mean.

I shrug.

Y/n: Yeah, but we're strong. We have each other, Lee, and Carley. I'd say Kenny, too, but he's going through it right now.

Christa: You guys seem pretty close.

Clementine: (Nods) Yeah, we've known each other since we were babies. He's my best friend, even if he's a little lame sometimes.

I look at Clementine and she giggles while laying her head on my shoulder.

Clementine: I'm kidding. You're super cool.

I playfully roll my eyes while Christa lightly laughs. I look at her, curious about where she's from.

Y/n: Where are you from, Christa?

Christa: I'm from San Francisco originally, but Omid wanted to go on a road trip across the united states. So that's what we did. Then everything fell and now we've just been moving across states, trying to stay ahead of the dead.

Clementine: Did you guys have any pets at home?

Christa: We had a cat, but it's been months since we've been home. It's probably pissed.

Y/n: (Shrugs) Cats are always mean.

I notice Christa look behind me and she nods to my guitar.

Christa: Can you actually play that thing?

Before I can answer, Clementine does it for me with a huge smile on her face.

Clementine: Yeah, and he's really good!

Christa: (Smiles) Maybe you can play something for me, sometime.

Y/n: Sure.

Again, Christa notices something on us and points it out.

Christa: Is that a radio?

Clementine: (Nods) Yes. It's how I used to talk to my parents sometimes, before they left.

As we keep on talking, Lee walks up to us with Carley. They wave at us and we wave back.

Lee: You interrogating this woman for us?

Clementine: Yup.

Carley: She set off any alarm bells?

Y/n: Not yet.

Christa looks up at them and smiles.

Christa: They're very thorough.

Lee: That's what we like to hear.

Christa looks at Lee and the two start to talk. She brings up Clem's radio and Lee tells her that it's broken. They start talking about Christa's home & she told him the same thing she told us about San Francisco and the road trip. Apparently, Omid is also into civil war history like Lee is.

Carley looks at Lee.

Carley: Sounds like you and Omid would be good friends.

Christa smiles.

Christa: They probably would be. Knowing Omid, he could probably make friends with a hungry walker.

After the talk ends, Lee leaves again with Carley as they go back into the train. A few minutes pass and I notice Lee walking towards the train station by himself. Curious, I point him out to Clem and we both stand up. We say "bye" to Christa and walk over to him, getting his attention.

Y/n: Hey, Lee. What are you doing?

Lee: Just gonna go check the train station for supplies.

Clementine: Can we follow you over there?

Lee: You two don't like the new girl?

Y/n: We do.

Clementine: Yeah, but... it's like we're a team. Like you said.

Lee: Yeah, alright. Come on.

Lee turns back to the rest of the group.

Lee: Clementine, Y/n and I are checking out this train station, alright? Hustle over if you hear anything.

After he's done, we head over to the train station with just the three of us. We're looking for something.
