Y/N Pov.
Lee: Hey, there, uh, Kenny.
Lee and I find Kenny working on his blue truck. He's leaned over and looking in it for some reason, but I don't know how trucks work. But so far I like Kenny, I think he's nice although we've just met him.
Y/n: Hello, Kenny.
Kenny keeps working on his truck as Lee starts talking to him.
Lee: How's your son doing?
Kenny: Good, I think. Katjaa's got a sister up in Memphis; we were coming back from visiting her. We were in a gas station and some guy grabbed my boy.
He leans up from his truck and looks at us.
Kenny: I thought he was kidnapping him. I was on the fucker in about two seconds and... Christ. Just lucky I was there. We saw a lot of bodies before we stumbled upon Hershel's. But we're a tough family. Ain't nothing gonna faze us.
Y/n: I guess you've had your fair share of the monsters, too.
Kenny: Yeah, that'd be about right. They were everywhere. I'm just glad we were able to get out when we did, otherwise I don't know what would've happened.
Y/n: Well that's good. I know how scary they can be.
Kenny: So you've had run-ins with them, too?
I nod.
Y/n: Yeah, it was before we met Lee. Our babysitter turned into one of them and we had to hide in her treehouse. We couldn't go back inside because that's where it was, so we scavenged the neighborhood for food and stuff.
Kenny: That's pretty smart, Y/n.
Lee: Yeah.
Y/n: (Shrugs) Well, we had to survive somehow. It's a lot easier to avoid the monsters than fight them.
Lee: (Nods) He's right about that.
Kenny: No kidding.
As we all talk, Lee looks at Kenny again, but this time asks him a different question.
Lee: So what's your family's plan?
Kenny: Get back on down to Lauderdale and let this mess get sorted out. Government'll start handing out shots and the national guard'll do its thing. On the odd chance things got too bad, we could hop on my boat, I guess.
I look at Kenny, surprised to hear about his boat.
Y/n: You've got a boat?
Kenny: I'm a commercial fisherman, catching mackerel, dolphin, whatever's biting and paying. Katjaa wouldn't be wild about it, but the boat's not that bad.
Y/n: I've never been on a boat before.
Kenny: Well it takes some getting used to due to all the rocking, but after a while it's not so bad.
Y/n: Hm. That's kind of cool.
Seeing as Kenny probably wants to get back to his truck, Lee asks him if he needs help before we leave to talk to the others. It's always polite to ask just in case, at least that's what my mom said anyways.
Lee: Need any help?
Kenny shakes his head.
Kenny: Nah, I think I got it.
He looks at Lee.
Kenny: Do you need any help?
Lee: What do you mean?
Kenny: I mean, in taking care of these little kids. You know what you're doing? You got kids of your own?
Y/n: (Mind) Good question, actually. I never asked if Lee had any kids.
I look at Lee, too, but he shakes his head.
Lee: Nah, nah. No...no kids.
Kenny: Would've liked one then.
Lee: (Shrugs) You know.
Kenny looks back at his truck and we decide to leave him be for now so he can work. We walk away from Kenny and I look at Lee, curious about something else. Like before, I adjust my hat and look up at him.
Y/n: Hey, Lee?
He looks down at me.
Lee: Yeah?
Y/n: Have you ever been on a boat before?
Lee: Nope. To be honest, I much prefer the ground than I do the Ocean.
I laugh a little and pat his arm.
Y/n: I feel the same. Though I would like to go on a boat one day.
Lee: Well, who knows? Maybe we'll get lucky and be able to go on one after this is all settled.
I nod.
Lee: Who should we stop by next?
We look around again. After having spent a few minutes talking to Kenny, I wonder who we can talk to now.
Y/n: (Mind) Hm...
I look around at the barn, but I don't see anyone there. I just about give up until I hear Katjaa speaking to Clem.
Katjaa: What's your favorite color?
Clementine: Purple.
I turn my head and look at the two, still sitting on the hay bales like before.
Y/n: Bingo. Let's go talk to Katjaa and Clem.
Lee: Sounds like a plan.
Once again Lee and I start walking and after just a few steps we end up by Clementine and Katjaa. I notice Clem's getting along with the nice lady pretty good when usually she's shy.
Y/n: Hey, Clem.
I wave to her and she smiles at me, waving back. I look at her and ask what she's been up to since I went with Lee to speak to Kenny.
Y/n: What have you been doing since I was gone?
Clementine: I've been telling Katjaa about stuff. Like my favorite color, my shoes, my hat, and my animals!
Y/n: Cool.
Clementine: I also told her about my hair because she said it was pretty.
I look at Clementine, slightly grinning.
Y/n: Did you tell her about how you force me to brush it because of all the tangles you get?
Clementine grins and leans down a little, her face a few inches away from mine. Her hazel eyes and curly brown hair being the first things I, like anyone, notice first as I look at her.
Clementine: Yes, I did. You're good at doing hair.
I smile.
Y/n: Well, I do like keeping my own up to par so it makes sense I'd be good at it.
Clementine: (Giggles) Sometimes you're a little more worried about your hair than me.
I look at Clementine and get slightly red from embarrassment.
Y/n: It's one of my defining features!
Clementine laughs as she teases me a little, poking my cheek.
Clementine: That's what you get for teasing me last night.
Y/n: Hmph. Whatever.
I cross my arms and turn my head away, hearing her giggle some more as Lee starts talking to Katjaa.
Lee: You two actually look relaxed.
Katjaa: I think we're doing just fine. Clementine was just telling me about first grade.
Lee: Oh, uh, how is that?
Clementine: It's easy.
Lee: Well, yeah. So, you're good?
I turn back around and uncross my arms as Clementine nods to Lee.
Katjaa: Anyway, it's almost like we didn't see people eating each other for the past three days. It's peaceful here, no?
I look at Katjaa.
Y/n: I like it here, but sleeping in the barn could've been better if it weren't for the smell.
Katjaa chuckles.
Katjaa: I agree. The barn was could have used some air fresheners.
Curious like before, I look at Katjaa and ask her a question of my own.
Y/n: So, Miss Katjaa, what do you do? Like, what's your job?
Katjaa: I am a veterinarian back in Fort Lauderdale, like Hershel here, except more with dogs and cats and not horses.
Y/n: You're an animal doctor?
Katjaa: (Nods) Yes, essentially.
I turn around to Lee, as I still don't know much about him, and ask him what he does.
Y/n: How about you, Lee?
Lee: I was a Professor. I used to teach up at the University of Georgia.
Y/n: Woah, that's pretty cool.
He nods and Katjaa looks at him.
Katjaa: We need to hope that we can go back to our jobs soon, Lee. Back to normal. It can't stay like this.
Lee: No, I used to. I was let go a little while back.
Katjaa: That's too bad. Well, I hear people always clamor back to college after a big disaster. People don't want to die ignorant, I guess.
Y/n: What does ignorant mean?
Lee: It basically means uneducated.
I nod and Lee asks a question to Katjaa.
Lee: How did you handle getting through the city?
Katjaa: Kenny just drove. We passed so many people that needed help. And we just... passed people, over some. Just...
Lee: It's okay. It's fine, you don't have to say any more.
Katjaa: I want to go home tomorrow, but even then I can't take away the things we... the things Duck went through. Don't you want to go back to the moment before you knew about all of this?
Lee: This could all be providence, you know?
Katjaa: Not what we saw.
Lee: You just never realize when something is happening to you, what you're being given; maybe this will all work out.
Y/n: Yeah, I agree with Lee. I think everything happens for a reason, so maybe the monsters have a purpose.
Katjaa lightly smiles.
Katjaa: Your shared optimism is refreshing. New. These past couple days, at least.
After a moment, I think Katjaa sees my guitar on my back as she nods to me and at it.
Katjaa: Can you play?
I look back at it, the strap of the guitar still around me.
Y/n: My guitar? Of course! It's one of the things I like doing the most.
Clementine: Yeah, he's really good.
Y/n: I can play it for you later. I think you'd like it a lot!
Katjaa laughs and nods.
Katjaa: Sure, I'd love to hear you play.
Y/n: Well I'll play it later and I'll show you what I can do! I'm not the best yet, but I'm not bad either.
Katjaa: I'm sure you're much better than you give yourself credit for.
She smiles at me and with all of my questions out of the way, as well as checking on Clem, I look at them.
Y/n: Well, we gotta check on the others.
Katjaa: Alright.
Clementine: Okay!
Y/n: We'll talk later.
I look at Lee and we walk away from the girls. We walk from around the house towards the back of it where I can see Shawn working on the fence and Duck is on the tractor by it. Shawn is using wood to build onto the fence and what looks like doors; it's a little weird, but I think it's creative, too.
Y/n: That's kind of cool.
Lee: The fence?
Y/n: Yeah, look at the doors on it. I'm not sure if it'd keep the monsters out, but it looks cool.
Lee: I think it'll do its job, but I guess time will tell. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
I think about what Lee says for a second, scratching the back of my head.
Y/n: I guess so.
We walk to the tractor Duck is sitting on and I wave to him. He waves back and Lee talks to him.
Lee: How you doing, Duck?
Duck: Good!
Y/n: What are you doing up there?
Duck: I'm gonna drive the tractor!
Duck pulls on a lever next to the steering wheel, but it doesn't move.
Duck: I'm the foreman! Lift with your back, Shawn!
I think back to earlier and I'm still unsure if he's dumb or not, but either way I think he's alright. Anyway, Lee and I leave Duck to play with the tractor as we go over to Shawn who's still nailing pieces of wood to the fence. He notices us and calls out.
Shawn: Hey, guys.
I see a bunch of boards laying around and before I can say anything, Lee says something first.
Lee: Need a hand?
Shawn: That'd be great. If you could cut those boards to length, that'd sure speed things up.
Lee walks to the bench nearby and starts cutting boards in half with a saw as he and Shawn talk. I stand by Lee and my job's to take the pieces that he cuts over to Shawn when he's done cutting them.
Shawn: My dad doesn't know how bad it is.
Lee: No, he doesn't.
Shawn: I saw a guy in Atlanta kill a kid. A boy. Just shot him right in the face.
Y/n: Geez, really?
Shawn: Yeah, man.
Lee: Was the boy one of the walkers?
Shawn: I don't even know. He was either attacking the guy or asking for help.
Y/n: But?
Shawn: But he didn't even hesitate. He just turned, put the barrel of the gun right between this kid's eyes and pulled the trigger. You don't see things like that. It's not like in the movies.
Lee cuts a board into pieces and I bring them over to Shawn, stacking them on top of each other gets another board.
Lee: They don't fall like you think.
Y/n: (Nods) Lee's right. They're kind of tough.
Shawn: Have either of you have to do it?
I look at Shawn.
Y/n: Huh?
Lee: Do what?
Shawn: Kill. Have you had to off one yet?
Lee: Oh, uh...
Looking at Lee, I remember the monster cop in the woods and worse monster Sandra. I shiver a little bit. I know she wasn't herself, not anymore, but it was still hard to watch. But she had to be put to rest; not one deserves to be left like one of those things.
I notice that instead of answering Shawn's question, Lee avoids it.
Lee: Sometimes it's kill or be killed.
Shawn: I guess. I don't think I'd sleep good after that.
He looks at me.
Shawn: I don't even want to imagine what you and that little girl went through. Rough stuff man.
Y/n: Don't worry about us, Shawn. We had each other and as long as we have that, we're fine.
Shawn: I'm happy we found you guys when we did. You, Lee, and that little girl. That place, your neighborhood, wasn't safe anymore.
Y/n: Yeah, no kidding.
Lee cuts another board and I bring the small pieces over, stacking them near the last ones I put over near Shawn. Lee, once again, picks up another board & starts cutting it like the other ones. Shawn starts talking to Lee again as he kneels by an uncovered part of the fence he hasn't got to yet.
Shawn: I'm just glad we're getting this fence built. Dad just wants to keep the family safe and thinks inviting people in is a bigger threat than whatever's out there.
Lee finishes up the board and I get up from the tractor tire. I pick up the pieces up and take them over to Shawn as he asks about Lee's family while he gets another board.
Shawn: How about yours? How's your family?
Lee: My brother and parents are in Macon, I hope.
I notice the last part of what Lee said. He said "he hoped," so I guess that means he doesn't know because he probably hasn't been there in a while. I wonder if being in that police car had something to do with that?
Y/n: I hope your family's okay, Lee.
Shawn: Oh, man, I hope so too. Maybe it's not too bad there.
Lee finally finishes the last board and I carry the pieces over to Shawn. He looks at us and smiles.
Shawn: That's probably all I need cut for now. Thanks.
Lee: And, Shawn, thanks again for the ride.
Shawn: No problem, Lee. Couldn't leave you guys behind. Anyway, when you see my dad around, he might want some help in the barn.
I see Lee look toward the barn and decide to look at it, too. Hershel just walked in with a pitchfork. Seeing as Lee probably has to talk to the old guy, I tap his arm so he notices me. Looking at me now, I nod toward the front of the house.
Y/n: I'm gonna go talk with Clementine and Katjaa again so you can go talk with Hershel.
Lee: (Nods) Alright.
Lee and I split up, he goes towards the barn and I head back over to the front of the house where Clementine is sitting with Katjaa on the hay bales. I walk over to them and they're happy to see me again.
Clementine: Hey, Y/n!
Y/n: Hey, Clem.
I wave to her and she tilts her head.
Clementine: I thought you were with Lee.
Y/n: Well he had to go talk with Hershel so-
Before I can finish talking, the sound of the tractor turning on and a loud scream that sounds like Shawn's voice comes out of nowhere from behind the house.
Shawn: Ahh!
Clementine jumps a little bit due to the noise and I look at her.
Y/n: Stay with Katjaa.
Before she can say anything to me I run towards the back of the house and at the same time Lee runs out of the barn with Hershel. As I get to the back, I see Shawn's leg is trapped under the big wheel of the tractor and he's being clawed at by walkers that are behind the fence. At the same time, Duck is being pulled by walkers.
Y/n: Oh, Crap! This isn't good!
Lee runs up next to me and we both look at Shawn and Duck, but he looks to me after a moment.
Lee: Get back!
Y/n: But I can-
Lee: Just stay away from the fence!
Lee looks at Shawn then Duck and just now I remember I never told Lee about my power. He doesn't know that I can help.
Y/n: (Mind) What do I do? What do I do?
I try to think of something, but then I see Lee run over to Duck as he starts trying to pull him away from the walkers. Kenny starts helping him, but Shawn is still trapped. I turn back and Clementine is standing a little but away with Katjaa, but Shawn's screams get my attention again.
Y/n: (Mind) Crap...
I turn back around as I hear the fence start to break and look back over to Shawn as cracks appear in the wood and the walkers are starting to get closer to him. Lee and Kenny are still trying to pull Duck away from the walkers and that means...
Y/n: Only I can save Shawn.
I run towards him as I hear Clementine shout to me.
Clementine: Y/n!
I hear her and I think the others do, too, but I can't focus on it. Instead I look at Shawn and find a piece of metal up against the fence.
Y/n: Shawn, pull the loose metal piece down!
Shawn: What-
Y/n: Just do it!
He looks back and using his arm closest to the piece, he grabs the piece of metal and it falls down on top of him. Without hesitation, I pull my arm back as I look at the multiple walkers starting to fall on the fence and cracking it more.
Y/n: (Mind) I don't have the aim to hit them all with my fire gun, so... I have to do this with a heavier hand.
I turn my fist in fire, much to Shawn's surprise, and just as I hear Duck be freed from the walkers, the fence breaks and with no time left... I throw my fist forward and unleash a dense column of bright orange fire in the shape of my fist.
Y/n: Fire Fist!
I make sure to aim it up away from the metal piece on Shawn and it plows through all the walkers, torching their bodies. I hear gasps coming from the side and after a few seconds I stop my flames to look ahead of myself. A large section of the fence in front of me is gone and there's a long path of charred ground past the fence.
Y/n: I tried to hold back... I guess my flames are a little stronger than I thought.
Shawn: Ugh...
I look down at the metal piece as I hear Shawn and quickly run over to it. The top of it is super red, but luckily it's a thick piece and I kept the heat as low as I could to avoid burning Shawn, but still kill the walkers.
Y/n: Don't worry, Shawn. I'll get you out in a second.
I slowly lift the metal sheet piece off of Shawn and it was a little hard, but I managed and as soon as I get it off of him he lays up as he breathes heavily.
Y/n: Are...you okay?
Shawn looks at me and nods.
Shawn: Yeah... thanks for that.
He tries to move his leg, but groans as it's still stuck under the tire. I look back at the others and everyone, but Clem, is staring at me like they've seen a ghost. They all seem a little... not scared, but surprised. However, Clementine immediately runs over to me and starts looking at me all over.
Clementine: Oh, my gosh! Are you okay?
She grabs my shoulders and looks at me, but I laugh and nod.
Y/n: I'm perfectly fine. Don't worry.
Clementine sighs in relief and lays her head against my chest for a second as she holds onto my arms. I can feel she's shaking a little bit, probably because she was scared for me, but I place a hand on her shoulder.
Y/n: Don't worry, Clem. I'm okay. I promise.
Slowly she stops shaking and I look back at Shawn, then the others. Lee walks over to me next and places his hand on my shoulder looking at me. But he's not afraid of me, he looks like he's concerned, but not scared.
Lee: Are you alright, Y/n?
Y/n: (Nods) Yeah, I'm okay.
Lee: Good, I'm glad.
He looks back at Kenny as I see Hershel come running out, a gun in his hands. However, he drops it as he sees everything is okay. It takes a second, but with the combined help of Lee, Kenny, and Hershel lifting up one side of the tractor Shawn manages to crawl back. They drop it just as soon as he is out and Hershel kneels by Shawn, hugging him while Duck, Kenny, and Katjaa come over to Lee, Clementine, and me.
Kenny is the first to speak. He's still surprised, but that's it.
Kenny: If you don't mind me asking... What the hell was that?
Lee, Kenny, Katjaa, and Duck all look at us, so I speak up. I explain to them my ability and at first they're all confused, except Duck who says I have a superpower. So, that's what I go with for now because it makes the most sense.
Y/n: Yeah, essentially it's what I got. It's pretty cool, but due to my ability I can't swim and if I'm submerged in water I start to feel weak until eventually I lose my power temporarily. Though rain and moving water is fine.
Kenny: Well I'll be...
Before they can ask anymore questions, Hershel calls out to us and we all turn to look at him. Shawn has his arm over Hershel's shoulder and they're both looking at me.
Hershel: Thank you. Thank you for saving, Shawn.
Shawn looks at me.
Shawn: Yeah, you really saved my bacon back there. I kind of owe you one, huh?
I shake my head.
Y/n: Let's just call ourselves even. You saved us, so I had to return the favor.
Shawn: You know, you guys could stay here if you want.
I shake my head.
Y/n: Thanks for the offer, Shawn. But we need to stick to our original plan, right Lee?
I look up at him as Clementine holds onto my shirt and he nods.
Lee: We've gotta head on down to Macon.
Hershel nods at us and I give him a thumbs up as he takes Shawn inside, but now that we're done here we hear Kenny.
Kenny: Well, you've got that ride to Macon if you want it.
Kenny, Katjaa, and Duck walk away and we soon follow after them. We all get in the truck before taking off towards Macon. As much as I'd love to stay, we have to search for our parents & being cooped up on a farm won't help that. And I imagine we'll be fine, as long as we all stick with each other.
