Nayeli glances to her.
"Yes, Algebra."
We get up and walk back towards the door, feeling slightly embarrassed but it seems for no reason, sense the kids work at the same speeds they have been all day... Weird.
We get a packet, and silently sit back down. We start working in silence, trying to match the amount of concentration going around in the room. But it seems to be absolutely impossible. The girls and I keep meeting worried glances as something deep in our stomachs begins to dwell. This day feels extremely changed, and weird. Something doesn't feel right, and everything seems to be highly misshapen.
A few minutes after, the bell for fourth period rings. Emily sighs with a smile on her face, but we don't follow. I begin to pack my bags silently, nobody speaking about the feelings we have today.
We walk out the door to independent reading. Basically, a study hall where all children do is throw paper, and chew on their lunches that they're supposed to be eating for next period.
We enter the dull and white colored classroom, where Ms. McAllister is also reading a book and we take our seats. Emily sits down next to me, setting her large book down lightly before turning in her seat towards me.
"How's your day going?" She randomly asks me, and I get thrown back.
"Uh, good but... Weird," I respond and Emily nods once.
"I am feeling it too... What if-" She gets interrupted by Jada and Gema walking in and laughing at something that Jada said loudly.
The worry fades from Emily's face as she glances happily up to them.
We wave at them and they run to take the seats next to us.
"Hey, snap girls!" Jada yells excitedly, placing her books down in front of her.
I glance over to Gema, who seems to be taking her time with everything now, smile fading from her face. She stares down at her books for a moment, looking worried and confused at the same time. I tilt my head as I watch her light brown curls dull and fade with her mood and my questioning face only grows. Was that just my imagination?
"Is something wrong?" Lizeth asks, taking me out of the daze.
"Something's fishy," Gema replies and Emily purses her lips.
"Fishy? Who says that now a days?"
I glare at her, and she shrugs as Gema shrugs with her. It's as if we can't feel anything. Everything is just confusing, and it's one shrug after the other.
"I don't know. That's the only thing word I can make for this feeling."
"Whatever it is, we'll find out soon," Jada adds, sitting down comfortably.
My stomach grumbles, and I realize how hungry I am. However, that's not the only thing on my mind. I open my mouth to speak but Jada turns to Emily with a bright smile, and the question burns away.
"Did you see how awesome the walls look? Nice job Emily," Jada says, trying to lighten the mood.
Emily smiles, lightly blushing.
"I know, I did my best. Especially sense my number one job was to make the principal mad... which worked."
"Now that you mention it... Something about this day does seem a little... off," Nayeli intrudes a light distant expression over her face.
I glance her, trying to suppress a groan of relief.
"See it's not just me!" Gema states angrily, and I keep my eyes from widening at the short burst of anger.
What is going on with us?
"We never said it was just you," I say calmly and I watch as Gema relaxes a little.
Soon enough, Ms. McAllister practically had to yell to us to start reading. We get our books out and read in silence.
The pit in my stomach begins to grow, and my hands around my book begin to shake and tighten. I glance to Emily sitting next to me, and see that she has a distasteful look on her face, letting out a sigh. I turn to Gema who sits on the other side, and see her head in her hands, her legs bouncing stressfully. That's it, I'm about to lose my mind. What is happening? Why are we all feeling this? And why does it seem to be only us and not the rest of the stupid school, that all seems to have been turned into mush with no brains? Something is going to happen... Something big...
A few minutes later the bell rings, and the girls and I all flinch with a yelp. I set my book down, looking around as we all glance at each other with fear and understanding crowding through our veins. It wasn't the bell to tell us it's time to go... It's the bell to tell us that someone has broken in. So, this is why I'm feeling off.
