Chapter 40

Maya's POV

"I need to ask a favour." her smile faded a little
"Anything for you"

I opened my eyes.

I couldn't speak.

I had a tube down my throat. I felt a little body snuggling against my legs.

Emma.

Someone was holding my hand.

Carina.

She was crying.

I tried to move my hand but it was barely noticeable. I gathered every strength in my body and lifted up my other hand. She needed to know I was okay.

After half a few minutes later Meredith got rid of the tube after she made sure I was able to breath on my own. Carina took Emma away because she was to young to witness the procedure.

I was so grateful for what Lucia told me but I was also nervous about her wish. I needed to talk with Carina alone.

"Hi my loves" I said as the door opened again.

Emma was tugging on Andy's and Carina's hand to be in the room sooner. Emma looked up at Carina asking for permission to run to me. Her mamma nodded and she ripped herself out of their hands.

"Mommy" she rushed to my bedside but stopped herself "Can I hug?" she asked softly

"Come here Princess. I want nothing more than a hug." she started to climb up but needed a little help. Carina walked up to her and lifted her up. She whispered something into her ear.

"I love you Mommy. I was brave for Mamma. I was good." she kept saying as tears filled her bright blue eyes. "You came back" she said now sobbing

"Princess I told you I'll always try my best to come back to you" I felt so guilty.

My work life almost caused my daughter to lose her mother once again. I didn't want her to experience any pain because of me.

I kissed her head and reached out for Carina's hand. "I love you Carina. I'm sorry" I tried to apologise for all the pain I have caused her

"No Bella. The most important thing is that you're fine. Don't apologise. I have heard from the Chief how brave you're. You have saved a lot of people yesterday" she said genuinely

"It's true Maya" Andy said after she saw my confused face.

What time is it?

How long was I out?

What happened on the call?

"You inhaled the chemicals which burnt your lungs. You were in a coma for 10 hours. Look out Maya." I slowly looked out of the room's window. My whole team was standing either sides of the hall. "It's not just 19, Maya. Every station which was on the call now sitting in the waiting room taking turns between the shift. Chief Smith is here as well." Andy explained

I did save them.

I had no idea.

They stayed for me. It was heartwarming.

"Andy can I..." I started but she just smiled at me knowingly

"Emma let's go find Auntie Bailey and Uncle Ben okay?" she was on my chest listening to my heartbeat. She looked up with fear in her eyes.

"Emy I'm okay. I'm not going anywhere. It's okay" I stroked her back as I kissed her forehead

"okay" she wasn't happy but accepted Andy's hand. I mouthed a thank you to Andy on their way out.
