Chapter 24

Maya's POV

Monday came really quickly.

We told Emma what's going to happen and who Zoe was yesterday. She had a minor melt down thinking that we would give her back or the CPS would bring her back to the group home. She slept with us since she needed extra care and protection and knowing we're her moms and we'll never give her up.

Carina made her famous French toast for breakfast but Emma wouldn't touch it.

"Bambina, you have to eat something. I know you're scared but look at us." She said waiting for her to look up from the ground. "We'll never let anybody else to be your moms. We love you and we want to raise you until you get bored of us, okay?" she said smiling even tho she was just as scared as our daughter.

"Not a chance Mamma" She smiled back for the first time.

We heard a knock on our front door. Emma jumped off of the chair and ran towards Carina hiding behind her. She lifted her up and rubbed her back to confort her.

"Hi, Zoe. Good morning, how are you?" I said opening the door with a forced smile

"Good morning. I'm fine, how are you?" she said walking towards the living room after me

"We're a little anxious but other than that everything is perfect." I told her hoping she would understand the situation and leave the comments about foster care out of the conversation unlike last time. She nodded and turned to Emma.

"Hi, Emma. I'm Zoe, do you remember me from the Station?" she asked with a warm smile. Emma looked up and nodded before hiding her face in Carina's neck again. " Okay. Let's sit down and I will ask a few questions from Carina and Maya first, okay?"

"Sí! No problem." Carina told her walking towards the couch with Emma in her lap.

" So who is with the child during the day? I know both of you are first responders so I need to be sure she is in good hands if both of you are on call." She said in a serious tone

" That's understandable. I'm staying with her for the first two weeks and after that she will be in daycare in the hospital. Chief Bailey handled all the paperworks so I have a special ID card to the hospital which gives me the same rights as Carina has to drop her off or pick her up anytime" I said looking at Carina who nodded

"Okay that's a perfect solution. I'm happy that you have this opportunity. How did you managed to fit Emma into your social life?" she questioned and I got frustrated a little since it's not about fitting her in.

It's about making sure she is safe with us. We didn't change anything because of her, we changed things for her. That's a huge difference.

" She has been to the Station on multiple occasions to meet with Maya's team and she came by a few days ago to the hospital meeting with my friends and colleagues. She even stayed at the daycare where she played with my friend's" Carina must have noticed that I became tens so she simply started to answer the question buying me time to calm down. She is truly amazing. "Emma can you tell us who do you like the most?" she asked our daughter to include her a little bit more

"Tia Andy, Ben and Ellis. Ellis is my friend from daycare" She told us shyly

"Wow that's sound nice" Zoe answered with a nice smile. I didn't know if she catched that Emma called Andy Tia but her face didn't even flinch at the word. " Do you like living here?" Zoe tried to talk with Emma since she seemed a little calmer and braver

" Sí! Mamma always makes me delicious foods. Mommy playes with me and my new doll house. They are so nice." she said smiling

"Who is Mamma and who is Mommy?" Zoe said smiling. I didn't think she was bothered by our new names.

"Mamma is Carina just like she called her Mamma. Maya is mommy because I already have... Or had a mom. So now I have three mums." she explained to Zoe like a big girl.

"That must be nice" she said "Where do you sleep, Emma?"

Emma looked at us nervously. I nodded to let her know it was okay to say the truth.

"My Mamma reads me a bedtime story and they stay until I fall asleep in my room. Sometimes I wake up at night because..." she looked at me again and I smiled at her knowing it's hard for her "Because of the nightmares. They let me sleep between them to calm down after I had them." she finished and snuggled up closer to Carina.

"Is it okay if I ask about the nightmares?" Zoe asked but Emma shaked her head signing she didn't want to talk about it anymore. "Okay that fine. I have one more questions for you Emma. Do you feel safe here? Do you want to stay here?" Zoe asked to be sure she was comfortable with us.

"Sí! Forever!" she said loudly. I smiled at her statement and Carina kissed her head hugging her a little closer.

"Okay we're done with the questions. Maya would you mind showing me around the house please?" she said looking at me.

"Of course let's start in Emma's room." I stood up and leaded the way towards my daughter's room.

"Wow she has quite a few toys and clothes already."she said surprisingly

" Well she has been living with us for almost a week now so it's the reasonable amount I think. The doll house was a gift from my best friend actually. "

" I see she loves firefighters and doctors. "she said smiling at the medical kit and the Teddy bear

" Yeah she is obsessed with my colleague Ben who was a surgeon before joining SFD. "

I showed her the bathroom and our bedroom as well as the kitchen. She walked back to our bedroom which meant she wanted to talk to me alone.

"I think I have seen enough for today. I only have one concern. She is already calling you mamma and mommy so I want you both to think about the future of her life. Have you talked about adopting her?" she said simply

"Zoe, we told you the first time. We want to be her parents legally. She is our daughter so I think you told us that after 10 weeks we could start the process if we want to and believe me we want nothing more. Those words weren't empty promises. We cannot imagine our life without her in it." I told her confidently

" Since today went well and both of you are more than capable of taking care of her I don't see a reason to come down here every two weeks. She is more than happy around you and she seems to be adjusting well. I'll came one more time at the end of the next month and if I'm right that would be the 8th week of staying with you both." she said counting in her head just like I did

" Yeah that'll be the 8th."I reassured her

" So I'll come and see if you're still on board with the whole adoption process and than we can apply for a court date. Is it okay with you?" she questioned

" It's perfect thanks for everything."
I walked her out as she said her goodbye and left.

I felt so tired after the visit. It went well but the anxiety and stress drained my energy.

I hope that Chief Ross closes that stupid insubordination case of Maya's and we can get our Captain back by the end of the season.

Let's manifest Danielle's coffee live with Stefania today. I mean she has talked about Stefania's amazing coffees.

I hope that she will join her but to be honest I cannot see her adding flavours to her precious Italian coffee 😂☕
