it was a quiet morning at the dolan household as sarah woke up alone in her bedroom. she sat up confusedly and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes as she did. grayson's side of the bed was empty and scarlett was nowhere to be seen.

she trudged out of bed and slipped on grayson's large t-shirt on her way out of the room. she heard scarlett's laughs from the living room. she could hear grayson saying something to her but couldn't understand what it was.

"bub, say dada!" grayson's voice echoed through the room making sarah roll her eyes. grayson and sarah have been competing to see who's name scarlett would say first.

"keep trying. it's not gonna happen." grayson looked up at the sound of his wife. they had only been married for a couple of months before she fell pregnant with scarlett. now their babygirl was about to turn 1 and began to make noises. the doctors said she would begin to talk soon.

"you know i was about to say how sexy you looked in my clothes but i guess not." grayson scoffed looking down at his daughter who was looking around in a daze.

"i don't need you to tell me because i already know." sarah winked at him before walking into the kitchen. grayson chuckled and picked up scarlett, following sarah into the kitchen. he placed her in her high chair, pulling his wife into a tight hug.

"good morning." grayson said in a low voice, pecking her on the lips gently.

"good morning, baby." sarah replied, kissing his cheek and turning to make breakfast. they heard the front door open and close before ethan walked into the kitchen.

"hey ethan!" sarah called out making scarlett's eyes light up.

"hey bro." grayson said as he did the little handshake with his brother. ethan hugged sarah before turning to his niece with an excited look on his face.

"hello my favourite niece! uncle ethan's here!" ethan said excitedly, kissing her cheeks repeatedly making her fall into fits of laughter.

"your only niece." grayson corrected jokingly making ethan wave him off.

it wasn't until 10 minutes later during breakfast when grayson noticed that scarlett was trying to say something.

"babe, she's saying something. say it baby!" grayson tugged on your arm excitedly which made you excited in turn.

"say mama! mama!"

"no say dada! not mama!" grayson ignored you and focused on the little girl who was making noises. ethan was smiling at her, eager to hear what she'd say.

"e-etan!" scarlett squealed excitedly making sarah's mouth drop open in shock. ethan dropped his spoon from excitement as he jumped up from his seat.

"did she just say ethan? oh my god, yes! that's my girl!" ethan yelled, ruffling her hair and squeezing her cheeks.

"etan! etan!" she continued making grayson slump in his seat. he hated to admit it but he was extremely jealous. he always wanted her first words to be dada. sarah saw his posture and automatically knew what he was thinking.

"gray..." sarah put her hand on his shoulder but he didn't respond. he just looked down at his food. ethan was still excited as he picked up the young girl and ran out of the room with her. "baby."

"i know, i know. she's just a baby, she'll learn to say my name. i just wished for so long she'd say my name first." grayson looked defeated but still had a small smile on his face.

"even if she said ethan's name first, she's still a daddy's girl. let me tell you that much." sarah laughed as she remembered all the times when scarlett refused to sleep in her arms and wanted her dad instead. grayson nodded with a smile.

"i know. i'll get over it soon." ethan walked back into the room with a crying scarlett in his arms. sarah automatically stood up and held her but she didn't stop crying. she made grabby hands towards grayson who felt his heart soar.

"she wants gray, i'm assuming." ethan said as sarah handed the young girl back to her dad. nothing could wipe grayson's grin off his face as he held the now quiet girl in his arms. sarah gave him a knowing look making grayson laugh silently.

no matter what, she's a daddy's girl and always will be.
