[4th september 2017]

you and the twins were on a yacht to celebrate your birthday. all of your families were there, as well as a lot of your friends. it was going really well and everyone was having a blast when grayson stood up straight and yelled to get everyone's attention.

"guys!" gray shouted and everyone looked your way. grayson took your hand in his and smiled nervously at you. both of your families knew what was happening and hid their smiles as they gathered around you. "i wanna thank you all for coming and celebrating y/n's birthday with us. it's been amazing and i'm glad everyone could show up."

you were both stood next to the edge of the yacht. grayon let out a shaky breath and gripped your hand tightly. unbeknownst to you, there was a small box in his back pocket which held something that would change both of your lives forever.

"this girl has been there for me through thick and thin. she's always, and i mean always had my back. she been my shoulder to cry on, my rock, my everything and i don't think i can ever thank her enough for it. she never asks for anything and is down for anything, anywhere." gray said genuinely making your eyes tear up. you sniffled and laughed tearfully. there were professional photographers set around you both to capture the moment. ethan was holding their camera as he filmed everything. "babe, i love you so much. you're honestly the greatest thing to ever happen to me. i'd freaking die for you. i wanna be with you forever which is why i want to ask you..."

he slowly got down on knee, reaching to his back pocket to pull out the small box. you gasped and covered your mouth with your hand, now crying openly. grayson smiled up at you as he wiped his own tears away.

"y/n y/l/n.. will you marry me?" he asked making you nod instantly.

"yes, oh my god!" you exclaimed, gasping at the beauty of the ring as he gently pulled it out of it's place. you extended your left hand and he held it with his. just before he could slide it on your finger, one of grayson's cousins, macy, got loose from her parents and sprinted towards grayson.

"macy, stop!" macy's mum screamed but it was too late. she had already slammed into grayson who lost his balance and fell on his side. the ring slipped out of graysons hand and went flying over the side of the yacht. you watched with wide eyes as it sunk into the water.

"no!" grayson yelled as he watched it sink. he stood up abruptly and glared down at macy, his breathing growing heavier. she cowered back and ran into her mother's arms who profusely apologised. she walked away, yelling at macy as she went. grayson kicked the small ledge on the side of the yacht angrily. "fuck!"

"gray..." you said softly and gently put your hand on his shoulder. he looked down at you with watery eyes making your heart break. you knew how much this would mean to him and to you. he bit his lip and rested his forehead on your shoulder. you sent ethan a look who suggested that going to the other side of the yacht would be a good idea. the photographers sent you sympathetic looks and left with their heads bowed.

"it was supposed to be perfect and now it's all fucked up! i can't even propose properly!" he yelled and sat on the edge of the yacht, his legs dangling over it. you sat next to him and felt that this was slightly your fault. after all, he was proposing to you.

"it is not your fault. macy came running into you. no one knew that would happen." you reassured him, rubbing his back soothingly. he held your ringless hand in his, caressing the spot where the ring should be.

"there's supposed to be a ring sitting here." he said sadly making you sigh, not knowing what to say. grayson felt terrible that he got you so happy and you didn't end up getting the ring. the money wasn't a problem for grayson. he could buy 500 of the same ring and it wouldn't affect his wallet. the problem was that the moment was so perfect and everything in both of your lives was so perfect but now it's ruined.

you put your head on his shoulder, feeling him respond by doing the same. neither of you knew what to do so you watched the sunset. without a ring on your finger.
