The little nap she took never took her over two hours to wake up. She woke up from a comfortable sleep, comfortable as she never had. It was sound not like the ones she was having for the past days full of nightmares. Her mind was never at ease as she kept replaying the past horrific event in her sleep, fighting all the battle all by herself and when she had no more strength to fight it, she gave in. As always..
Whoever looks at her expression, will be able to point out that she never had a good rest, she cried herself to sleep, the sleep that was has nothing in it but a nightmare. She had to close her eyes tightly, covering up her whole body with her head inside the blanket even though she was sweating like a Christmas goat. It reaches to the extent that she stops herself from sleeping since the moment she closes her eyes, her vision will be all blurred by what happened.
Stepping out of the bed, she waltzed into the bathroom to take a shower. She felt weak and lethargic, She needed to freshen up in order to retrieve her strength. She needs that, she has to stand up for herself. She stared at the girl in front of her as she stood in front of the vanity table. Her face looked dull and her eyes that once had a glint in them held nothing. Her lips are set into what look like a permanent frown. She can't remember the last time she smiled, probably the day her grandparents arrived. Smiling just isn't something she remembers how to do again, or maybe, it's more like there is nothing to smile about.
Bracing herself to face the day, she is-was tired. Tired of all this chaos around her. Living in her room, day and night crying will never make all her worries go away. It's better if she faces the world as it looks. As it decided to grace her. All those looks, the look of disgusting, resentment, pity -not to him, To her. That hurt her the most. She was tired of it all, it had stopped. If he resents her that much now, feel disgusted by just a mere glance of her. He didn't have to force himself. There are always the other options which will actually set him free-Set her free. He should just set her free from all these shackles.
Things need to be over, they have to stop. It is better if they go their own ways before it is too late to do so. Enough with looking at her reflection in the mirror, she exhaled a big tired sigh and shrugged off. She extended her hand up to stroke away the wet strand of her hair sticking to her face backwards. She opened the faucet as water gushed out nonstop, she used her hand to collect the water; Used it to wash down her face clean as though she didn't before. Picked up a small fluffy towel from the hanger to wipe the water up her face. She moved to the closet to get a simple gown to wear. Covered her low ponytail hair with a turban.
Her tummy growled, reminding her of how she starved herself. She looked at the wall clock ticking in the room situated close to her favorite canvas. The time read 5pm, she offered her missed prayers before deciding to go hunting for food to eat.
Stepping out of her room, her focus was on the phone in her hand. She failed to register her surroundings. She decided to just order junk-probably a pizza and wash it down with a cool cola. She has no appetite, or maybe the food in the house that she hates. Notification popped up to her screen, her lips set into a thin line, scorn finding its way to her face. Even though the event that took place two days back was wiped away from the surface of the earth, difficult for the paparazzi to enrich because of how influential both the parties are, still some gossip mongers couldn't help but spread many unrealistic rumors around. Some of them kept on saying all those nasty things that couldn't stop Afifah from wondering how and squinching up her face and eyes in disgust.
She cringed at some comments while swiping on others. She can't understand how people are these days, making stupid scenarios in their head without any realistic thought and spreading it as if it happens in front.
Going further, she came across one that says she was caught cheating with her boyfriend in her office by her husband. Some say, this was not her first time doing that, if not that how can the company be booming nonstop. They have that belief that a woman can not be this successful without bargaining herself in the way. They continue to question her chastity which she just hissed and overlooked.
People will talk, let them.
No matter what you didn't they will always talk, and one thing she agree is, you are something when people talk. You can never see people talking at non important people, the or the non influential. Whenever you see them talking there must be some sort of celebration, the riches and high ups. You have reached the line when rumors about you continue to spread like a wildfire. So she just scoffed at them. She was about to lock the phone screen when another notification made its way to her phone. She wanted to neglect it but some things caught her attention. She found herself startled, open-mouthed or was it marvel, she couldn't tell.
Was her eyes playing a trick on her or did she just see the almighty Sadiq Saraki behind the bars? Wanting to go deeper into the information but her rang distracting her from that. Looking at the caller ID, she hesitates before answering. After answering, she remained muted. Not able to find a suitable word to utter, her Heart was racing behind her ribcage. She was scared of what her mother in-law would say. Yes, now she is no longer her mother but her mother in law, she thought. She will reprimand her more than what her mom did two days back. Even her mother did not sympathize with her, who is her mother-in-law, she will definitely favor her son. Every mother will do that.
"Won't you talk to me" her mother's voice came on from the other end of the line. Wait, she didn't sound mad, birse nor ire. More like calm and soothing. Isn't she supposed to be wrathful, why calm and loving as always. "Mum..my" she stammered, her voice was shaky, her throat tightening as she shook her head. The word mummy sounds so heavy on her tongue. This was the first time she felt held back in uncertainty to call her aunt mom.
The sounds of ear ring colliding with the screen from mummy's heard by Afifah notifying that the call wasn't terminated, mummy was still on the call. She sighed, this is all what she can offer, isn't bad or good to say, that is the all thing she was doing for the past days and it calmed her alot. "You're disappointed with me right" she finds herself saying that _more like whispering. She knows she is, everyone is disappointed with her. No one needed to tell her that, nevertheless she asked.
"Not really," came mummy's reply. "I'm more worried about you," she added. She could tell the surprise look on Afifah's face even without seeing her, and she couldn't help but grasp the little silence gasp from Afifah's side. She smiled, the assuring one as if Afifah was in her front. "How are you feeling? '' she went ahead to ask since Afifah made no effort to say a word. Her voice loving and caring as always, marvelous, always makes Afifah feel at ease and want to hear it nonstop. The woman just has it all, the ability to mend a broken heart with just a hug, wipe away tears with just a kiss, make one at ease with just a smile and make a person crave more of her beguiling voice.
"Is it fine? I don't know. But I'm emotionally wrecked" Afifah deadpanned, by the way she was so appreciative that some one really cared about her well-being at the moment , not going all-round with another series of scolding. And this treatment she was getting from her mother in-law is making her want to quit on what she was about to do. Not that she will though, things need to end anyhow.
"It's okay to feel that way" mummy said, "everything is okay now" she assured Afifah to be confused as to what she meant that everything is okay. "What do you mean?" She questioned.
"Didn't you see the news," mummy asked, "that Sadiq Saraki has been sentenced to three years in jail with a fine" Mummy informed, with a calmed and relieved voice.
"How" she queried in daze.
"Nabil didn't tell you, didn't you see the news, anyway" mummy paused, and then went ahead, "your grandfather and your fathers got into the matter, they made sure that boy was sentenced to jail. Clear evidence was obtained from the office CCTV cameras and that cannot be overlooked even though the boy's father wanted to," mummy scoffed but concluded with "At the end, the boy was punished" mummy finished up with a proud and satisfied tone. She was more happy to hear that from her husband who flew exactly that very day for Canada to handle the matter. He was more furious than Nabil the moment he heard about what happened from Nabil. He has to take quick action before it's too late. He will never rest until he puts the man that tries to sexually assault his daughter, the apple of his eyes.
No word can express how he felt about Afifah, she was his daughter and brother all in one. He promised his brother to take care of his family and he has to do it even if he is going to lose his own life in the way. All it took him was just two days to send the boy to jail even though his friend; the boy's father was trying to stop that. Sadiq Saraki's father was Alhaji Suleiman's friend but no more now, they are more like sworn enemies from the very minute his son was sentenced to jail.
Afifah was taken aback, Not like she doubted her grandfather and father's power, there is no possible way, she was surprised because she knew who Sadiq Saraki was, he can kill a person and still get Scot free.
Power is power.
"About Ammyy" Afifah started but pulsed. She knew the message she was trying to send was understood, there is no reason to go further. Mummy can understand her even from her voice, more than what her mother can do. Hijay Zainab sighed, not loud but enough for Afifah to catch on since she was that attentive. "Don't worry about her, I will talk to her" she assured.
After a while of chatting with her mother in-law, she dropped the phone and right at the moment her tummy cried in hunger for the nth time. Her hand unknowingly went down to her stomach and patted it a little. She remembered she had nothing edible in her stomach since morning. Her pizza was on the way so she walked down the stairs to wait for it.
She was almost half down the stairs when she paused, realizing that the whole living room was surrounded by darkness. Is there no one in the house; she wondered. Why would the living room light off, is not like they used to turn it off. It was always on, Day and night. She decided to turn on the touch light of her iphone when suddenly the spotlight was on, to her direction. Afifah had to cover her eyes with her palm to dye the sudden rays of light falling into her eyes when she heard a piano playing.
Removing her hand, she saw the whole room was covered in candles, lilies and Peony flowers . With red heart balloons on the ground while some alphabetical balloon design upward hanging on only God knows what, it read; happy birthday Maryam. She didn't need to be told whose work was that. No one called her with that name except him. She didn't feel anything, not that she wasn't surprised. Actually, she was surprised but she hid that. Her expression was blank as a white paper that couldn't be read by anyone.
The melodic sounds of the piano draw her attention as her sight falls toward the direction. But nothing could be seen, wait…except the piano and long fingers. A shadow behind, Likely of a person playing the piano.
All her life, she would be lying if she said she had heard sounds good like that. It was so rhythmic and tranquil. And from the background music, it blends with the piano sounds singing a happy birthday to her. Her eyes intensely look at the long ferrell fingers doing the magic effortlessly. She became enthusiastic to know the person behind the shadow. But of course, she was just trying to satisfy her curiosity because she knew at the back of her head who was that.
When the music died down, the person stood up tall, walked over to her in a grandeur stride. The closer he comes the more clearer he becomes.
"Happy birthday" he wished her, his eyes darted on her as he bit his lower lip waiting to see her response. Her eyes never waver, she looked at him with a blank expression, her eyes held no glint, It was as blank as a white paper. When she get tired of staring at him, she looked away. Her hand playing with the hem of her sleeve. Immediately her attention was stolen by the view of the garden through the wide window.
"I'm sorry" he said with a heavy tone, his eyes looking everywhere but her. He was ashamed of himself. "I'm sorry for how I treated you, I shouldn't have shouted at you. I'm really sorr_" she stopped him before he continued.
"There is no need for that," she said, looking away from him. She chewed in her lower lips contemplating on whether she should just go with the flow or do what she set on. Remembering that this alliance brought nothing but anguish to her. She decided to just go with the latter.
"I mean, You should just set me free" she muttered, even though her voice was trying to betray her but she stood her ground and looked into his eyes, daring him to say otherwise.
"What.." he tried to make sense out of what she said, but he found it as a puzzle. A puzzle which for the first time he failed to solve. Did she mean… no, no, no. Not that. It had to be something different. "What do you mean?" he asked, sounding confused and almost agitated. Almost.
He thought he heard wrong but what she uttered next rendered him speechless, making him feel as if the world was crashing on him. It made him realize that he never heard a word that sting painfully in the ears and hurt him in the heart. It cut through his veins, ran through his blood as it pained him severely. He nearly had a myocardial infarction.
"Divorce me!"
