Chapter Twenty Four:

I felt like I couldn't breathe.

I felt like I was stuffed into a box and was locked away, fighting my way to get out; trying to escape the suffocation as the walls closed in on me.

But I couldn't get out, and I had to accept the fact that I was going no where. I was going to stay trapped inside that box.

Expect it wasn't me in that box.

It was Carter.

Axel's words rang in my ears. The way he announced it, a grin dancing like flames on his face, his eyes alight with life; like every life was an energy source to his living. Like he was sucking in the souls of the living.

A face of pure evil, a smile like demons, eyes glistening like the fire from hell, hair as dark as the devil himself.

There before me stood a monster; a tyrant.

"Travis Bennett from Vermont High; the winner of this fight, and unfortunately we must wish well to Carter Miller from Redlake High; may god be with you."

As soon as those words left his mouth, I couldn't help but feel fury wash up inside me. It ran through my veins like lava burning destruction in its path. It was the only thing I had felt since discovering that Carter had lost.

But it didn't really click into me Carter was going to be taken away until the army men stepped from their posts from the two push-to-open swinging doors, taking their time to walk up to the boy who was now struggling to get to his feet.

Carter was drenched in sweat, and from where I was seated I could see that he was using the tiny bit of strength left in him to gather himself up and get onto his feet. And I knew he wasn't getting to his feet to try and fight for his chance to live. I knew him enough that he wasn't going to go as a coward lying on the floor. But go as the guy who stood before them and stared down fate knowing that it wouldn't work.

But as Carter got to his knees and the army men grew closer I knew that I couldn't just sit here and watch Carter be dragged away.

I ignored the disgruntles of Logan and dodged the hand that reached out to me from Jarvis, putting pressure on my bad foot causing my vision to darken slightly and have a throbbing sensation take over my foot, I almost toppled down to the left where I would've fell on top of everyone on the rows before me, but managed to grab the railing before I could. Ignoring the pain in my foot, I began my struggle trying to get down the stairs in time to get to Carter.

I ignored the calls from Logan and Jarvis, and ignored the worried looks on Lucy and Shawn's face. Logan didn't bother trying to come after me, he knew that I wouldn't give up trying to get to him, but that didn't stop Logan from standing on the rails on the row we were in, as if preparing himself to grab me if anything happened.

But instead of feeling the warmth and gratitude I'd really feel, all I felt was the dreadful fear within me, thinking I might not get to Carter in time.

By the time I reached the bottom of the stairs, hopping on my left foot while gripping the railing tightly, I couldn't help but feel the stares of everyone around me. But I ignored them, shrugging them off like wiping dust off my shoulder and began my slow hop towards Carter who was now standing, his head risen high, looking in the opposite direction of what I was seeing him. His light blue long shirt stuck plastered to him from sweat, his long black tracksuit pants ridden up slightly showing his calves which had blood trailing down them.
