Be careful...not all are what they seem.

Some people pretend to be the beach,

but they are actually quicksand.

As Vidya came out of the ward, she was struck by three people walking towards her, who were in deep discussion. She sensed that something about them didn't feel right. They were an odd group and looked quite out of place. Two among them seemed to be extremely poor villagers; a very old man accompanied by a middle aged woman. And they were trying to talk to an extremely irritated gentleman wearing a designer suit and costly accessories.

As she walked past them, Vidya suddenly remembered that she had seen that man in designer suit earlier in the hospital, although she couldn't remember exactly when it was.

As her curiosity got the better of her, she snuck into the adjacent room; planning to follow them and hear their conversation.

But she overheard footsteps behind her. She ducked behind the patient privacy screen in the room, just as the well-suited man led the two villagers inside.

Vidya caught her breath and strained to listen to their conversation clearly, as they were speaking in low tones.

Vidya first heard the woman's voice and was struck by how desperate she sounded.

"Sir, my daughter's marriage is in two weeks from now, I really need the money urgently,"

There was a long pause and then Vidya heard a man's voice "I told you before and I am saying it again. I can give you Rs 50,000 in cash. That's all." Something about the callous and sinister way he spoke instigated a chill down her spine.

"Sir, Please! Have mercy on us. Our Sarpanch (village head) told me that you will give me Rs 100,000 for my kidney" she pleaded in the same desperate voice.

Vidya suppressed a gasp with great difficulty. She felt numb...shocked. The man in the designer suit stuck his head outside, making sure they were not being overheard.

He spoke in a distinctly angry tone now, "You people are surely going to get me into trouble here. What's wrong with you? On one hand you say it's urgent, and on the other you don't want to take the money I am offering. I can't give you any more than this. Take it or leave." he hissed.

"Sir please don't say that. We...we will take the money you are offering." the village woman whimpered.

"Ok then, please wait outside in the lawns for me. I will fix up everything for the operation with the doctors here and let you know."

Vidya held her breath as she heard their footsteps leaving the room.

She exhaled slowly. Her mind was exploding with questions.
