What you've said doesn't really sound like a problem, but with the feelings you're having, it seems like it is to you. I totally understand where you're coming from, and I'd say just go with the flow. If you've met him many times and have been friendly with him, go ahead and press that follow button. Following his profile won't do any harm now, will it? From there, you can take things slowly and figure everything out yourself, in time.
The key is to be patient and let time do its job. You never know what's in store for you.
