Subject: RE: Sorry

Eric,

This case has been ugly and unique (most fitting word I could think of). That’s why you need to let it go. Don’t lose sight of the fact that the majority of our cases are less extraordinary (Again, best word I could think of). That’s why you need to let this one go. You are more valuable to the department (and Kelly) as the man you were before this started. Please, leave the case in peace.

It’s not Jonathan that I can’t forget; It’s Lucy.

[QUOTED TEXT]

To: Sgt. Eric Renfield

From: Sgt. Adam Dalton

Subject: Sorry

Eric,

I felt that you deserve an apology for what happened. Since you won’t answer my calls or speak to me in person, this is my only option.

Yes, I did recommend that you be taken off the case. This was not for the case’s benefit, but for yours. I took no pleasure in it. I have told you before that you are an excellent detective, but this case is doing something to you. In the past few weeks, I have watched you go from being a level-headed, responsible partner with unique insight to a disheveled, erratic, irresponsible mess. It is this case’s fault, not yours.

No, I did not recommend that the department force you to take a leave of absence. That was Barton’s call. I had no idea that he would do that. If I had known, I would have tried to dissuade him. I have tried to change his mind, but he is convinced that you and your job need some time apart. If I have any advice for you, it is this: let this go for now. Try to enjoy your time off. Take Kelly out for a nice dinner and decompress. Forget about Jonathan Ludarac, and relax. If you can do this, you will come back better for it.

Now for the apology: I’m sorry, Eric. I know this case has meant a lot to you, but part of being a detective means maintaining a separation from the case. You got too close. I’m sorry I didn’t see it soon enough.

Please get in contact with me soon. You know where to find me.

Adam
