Chapter 1

I opened my eyes but couldn’t see anything, that confused me. It must be really dark where ever I was, so dark that I couldn’t see anything. I could hear bleeping though. It was steady, almost comforting. Beep. Beep. Beep.

There were people walking around, I could hear them, their footsteps. But I still couldn’t see anything. Voices drifted to me but I couldn’t tell where they were coming from. I could feel bed sheets under me, could feel that I was wearing some kind of gown.

There was a needle in the back of my hand I realised then, a needle, a freaking needle! Where the hell was I? What happened?

Sitting up in bed the beeping got faster. Beep. Beep. Beep. I reached up with my hand to touch my face. I couldn’t even see my hand in front of my face. It was that dark. How can it be so dark? It was like there were so many colours but at the same time none. Feeling my face I realised there were bandaged covering my eyes. Why?

The crash.

I remembered all the shards of glass, all falling towards me as I lay there.

“You awake then.” A cheery voice said from my right. I froze before slowly turning my head as if I was looking at her. “You names Cyan right?” she asked me.

I nodded, “Yere. Cyan Kelson.” I murmured unsure of everything.

“Ok, well I’m Lucy.” She sounded cheery. “Dr Addams will be over to see you in a sec. But is there anything you want me to get you while I’m here?”

“Cup of tea?” I asked hopefully. “Extra strong with tow sugars.”

She laughed a little, “Sure I’ll be right back.” With that I herd her footsteps fading away and mixing with all the others.

So I was in hospital. I had bandages over my eyes and a Doctor was coming over to see me. There was this horrible feeling churning in the bottom of my stomach. I think I knew what he was going to say, what he was going to tell me and if I was right…what would I do?

“Cyan?” A deep male voice asked. “I’m Dr Addams. Would you mind answering a few questions please?”

“No.” I whispered already scared of what he was going to say.

“Ok well. How old are you? What school do you go to? And what were your plans for the future?” He asked me.

“Seventeen.” I replied. “I go to Saint Luke’s collage. I always wanted to be some kind of artist or make comic books or manga’s. That kind of thing.”

“Ok then.” He sounded sad. “Is there anyone you want me to call. Anyone you want here with you?”

I shoo my head. “My parents are away on business for the week and my friends don’t have transport to get here.” Neither of them had passed there driving test yet which was why I didn’t get home until late last night. I’d had to drive them home from the cinema since Emily had insisted on going to see that new horror movie that had come out.

“One cup of tea.” Lucy said taking my hand and guiding it to the hot mug. A smile still in her voice.

“Thanks.” I said taking a sip of the scolding liquid.

“Cyan. I’m going to be honest with you. I’m not going to sugar coat it or anything like that but ,” Dr Addams paused as if not wanting to say it. “Your lucky your not dead. The glass could have easily gone into your brain or the car being pushed into you may have paralysed you.”

“Just get to the point doc. I’m blind aren’t I?” My voice was shaky but I couldn’t help it. It was hard knowing that I’d never be able to draw again, or become an artist or drive or anything like that.

“Yes, you are.” Addams sighed. “There’s nothing we can so I’m afraid. Your eyes were to badly damaged to save. You still have them but there scared. There was nothing we could do but remove the glass from them.”

“I… I understand.” I whispered taking another sip of the now not so hot tea. “What happened to the guys in the other car. The one that crashed into mine.”

Addam’s sighed again. “Their being charged with drunk driving and something else I don’t remember. But other than a few stitches they were unscathed.” I nodded.
