Runes come in various forms and are talked about in many cultures. Each culture has used this magick slightly differently from another.

In Wicca, the elders would cut small cylinders of wood from a fallen branch and then engrave the rune symbol onto the wood. Some then added the inverted symbol onto the back, whereas others left it blank. They would cast these runes by picking up a handful and ceremoniously throwing them over a white cloth. The elder would then get his reading and interpret as he saw fit.

Many Germanic peoples used the process of writing runes to emphasise the power of a spell or curse. Some used this for protection of sacred monuments, while others attempted to bring back the dead.

Often people would just use runes to write messages to each other.

Some would draw or paint the symbols on themselves to bring power or good luck with the task they were aiming to complete.

Even earlier than all of these examples, runes were seen as a warning - a type of divination. The runes you drew or saw would give you some indication as to what was coming next.
